ALDL interface cable, but no "M" on aldl! no data!
Just picked up a Max 223 cable to interface with my 165 MAF Ecu. (1986 IROC Camaro, 305 TPI, auto tranny)
I was trying to setup Craig's dos/qbasic based aldl software to work with it, when I noticed that I had no connection to my "M" on the ALDL.
According to my chiltons, "M" is the 8000 baud connection port? Well, it's blank on my ALDL. Apparently there is another data connection, at
pin "E". I do have this, but from what i have read, it's the 160 baud data line. Craig's program won't work with that baud.
Does anyone know where i can find a program to interface with my ECU which will work with my setup? Thanks guys, im totally new to this,
and am really looking forward to being able to run a diagnostic!

Some 86 TPI models didn't get 8192 baud, only 160. Some late 86 and all TPI cars after that did get 8192 baud. The E and M wires are actually connected on some cars to the same data line as the ecm only has one data line. The difference is in the hardware in the ecm and the software in the prom so if you do some searching for a later 87-up 165 ecm you will find one with the 8192 hardware and then use a bin from a newer car. Get it and install it and run the data line from E to Craig's software and use a bin that has 8192 baud capacity (like the ARAP or anything 87 and newer) and be done with it. There is a site out there that shows you which chip it is inside the ecm. It may be one of the Australian sites as the 808 is a Aussie version of the 165 with 160 baud only.

Well, i received an e-mail from craig about his software today. He said that my "E" shouldn't be the 160 baud, because it's an 86. I do have a late-year production model too, with the updated PROM pack. (replaced it myself)
When I shorted out the A-B ALDL connection with a 10K resistor, I didn't get any responce from the check engine light. Should it be doing anything?

If you short A and B without a resistor it should flash codes. If no codes are present it should flash code "12". If it doesn't do anything you either have a bad bulb or a bad connection or a bad ecm.
