Haltech ECMs

Has anyone ever used or know anything about haltech real-time programable ecms like the E6GM? I can get a laptop real cheap, and was thinking this sounds a lot better than burning proms for tuning. This is a little down the road of course since my mods are basically none right now that would require chip tuning, but i'm very interested in this. I was also wondering about how much these things cost. Any input is totally appreciated! Thanks!

Believe it or not the Haltech is based off a GM Australian ECM. And if you really wanted to you could program on the fly a GM ECM. The Australian "808" ECM has a hac available for just that. You are actually in a very good place right now to start learning all you want to know about programmable EFI, factory or otherwise and this site is a great archive resource. It's a whole lot better than needing to learn about EFI when you have an engine that can't be tamed.

Easy to use cause they're rather primitive.
Break one driving to work and what do you do?.
I carry a spare ecm cost $35.
Real time leaves no time for notes.
I'll live with my proms, and multi-million dollar designed stock stuff.

Well, thing is, I already have my ECM and a spare so I'm not worried about that side of it, and i can score a laptop thats up to the task for next to nothing ($200 for a pentium 133, which i'll probably anyway) since i work for a computer company. Because of that background not afraid of chip tuning, but i'd rather make adjustments while out making G-Tech passes on country roads than burn a chip, try it out, come home, adjust stuff and burn another one, go back out, and repeat that process until its pretty close. Plus i imagine all the PROM buring gear and scan tools cost much more than this unit does. I'm sure its possible to burn proms from a laptop but the stop and go element is still there. I'm not against burning PROMS don't get me wrong, its just something I'd rather not do. I'd rather run a carb and was considering it until i found out about this.
I still haven't been able to get a price on one yet though from anyone.

The base price for a Haltech is ~$700, last I checked. That comes with the software, but no harness but the factory harness is not difficult to adapt. I know you don't want to burn proms but so you know a portable prom burner is $150, prom editing software is $100 or free (guess which one is better), scanner software is free but is actually very good or pay about $250 for good licensed stuff. The ALDL cable can be made for about $10 from Radio Shack which also has all the car voltage adaptors, flash proms are about $5 and the laptop you need anyway.

Hmm, good point. I dunno, it'll be summer before i actually do any of this, I'm starting to consider the PROM thing again, it'll probably take me until summer to make up my mind anyway
