Computer super noob

Hey guys I've had my carbed camaro for awhile now, but I recently found a 1992 firebird v6 that is just too clean to pass up for the price.

I know next to nothing about the ecm, I've read some of the stickies and searched around a bit, but I am still confused. To my understanding when I upgrade to a v8 I could just reprogram the prom chip to work. I wanted to make sure that this is the case, or if I need to pull a different computer.

Thanks in advance

Re: Computer super noob

Why swap to a V8? If you do, you will need the transmission from the V8 as well. Would be easier to turbo the V6 and keep everything else in place, and just tune the stock ECM for the added power, which is a breeze. To answer your question though, yes, if you swap to a V8 you need to tune the chip, and you can keep the stock ECM...

The '90 - '92 TPI f-body cars and the '90 - '92 MPFI f-body cars used the same ECM (1227730).

The PROM is different between the two, but the CALPAKs and knock filter are also different. You can use the MPFI MEMCAL, just need to re-program the PROM and solder a jumper on a CALPAK pin (56) to change the injector firing rate. The knock filter specs will be off, but it works.

Under the hood wiring changes will need to be made. Two of are for the EGR and AIR system. Of course need to add two additional injector connectors.
