Need help on transitioning from 165 to 730 ECM

I have a 1986 IROC with OEM 305 TPI setup using the 1227165 ECM. The MAF setup.

As a side note, I'm real close to making the last largest purchase for my 383 build, the AFR210 cylinder heads. This build uses a Comp Cams part #08-468-8 Hydraulic Roller 292XFI Cam. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-08-468-8
With this cam selection, a MAP based 1227730 PCM was recommended based on research I've done.

In order to avoid troubleshooting issues while replacing the engine & ECM, I'd like to start with the 165 to 730 swap on the OEM 1986 305 TPI. I would use a TPI harness from Larry's Electric:http://www.larryselectricsite.com/st...hp?productid=0

Then I would get an EBL Flash P4 730 ECM and a MAP sensor.

Does anyone see a problem with this plan? And, is there a place for the MAP sensor to go on a 1986 intake plenum?

Ideally it's a good plan, but you're giving yourself way too much work to do. The EBL Flash and EBL-P4 are essentially the same product, save for a few minor differences. It would be much easier to keep your stock MAF harness and with very few changes in respect with adding the MAP sensor, apply the EBL Flash system. It will save you so much time, and you will achieve the very same results as opposed to changing the entire harness to a SD harness then getting the EBL-P4. As far as the MAP sensor is concerned on a plenum coming from a MAF system, just do what I did, get a hold of an LG4 MAP sensor bracket for cheap, then modify it for your plenum. All you need to do is drill and cut it, then drill and tap into the plenum, very easy. Although my GTA came with the 7730 from the factory, I am running a MAF TPI with my turbo setup because I wanted to keep the orginal parts in tact. This is what I did for the new MAP bracket installed, very easy to do...

Thanks for the info regarding the MAP sensor, I can handle that.

What kind of rewiring am I in for when installing a new 730 ECM? Just the sensor itself?

I remember reading a link (from a .edu site) where a guy did a conversion for a 1985 thirdgen MAF to 730 MAP and seemed very complicated.

The 85 harness is much different than even the x165 MAF harness. Search on the x165 to x730 ECM swap, and you should find a nice chart to show the repining change. Either re-use the MAF wires for the MAP, or run some new wires.

Re: Need help on transitioning from 165 to 730 ECM

The '85 ECM's were a little different from the '86 through '89 ECM's, which might be why it was a little more complicated in the article you read. If you consider what I was saying regarding the EBL Flash w/Port Mod, then wiring for the MAP sensor is very easy. All it requires is as follows; removing three pins from behind the ECM and wrapping them securely because they are no longer needed, then moving an additional four pins behind the ECM to new locations. Then you will be moving the two pins from the MAF connector to your new MAP connector, and the third pin gets connected to the TPS connector. It's extremely easy to do, if it takes you more than five to ten minutes to do with everything in hand I would honestly be in shock, that is how easy it is. However if you have your heart set on pulling the entire '7165 wire harness out and replacing it with the '7730 wiring harness via the harness you would get from Larry's Electric, that will take much longer to do, but either way will work.

Hi
Look this over, you can keep the 7165 and loose the mas air flow but gain some nice features. Like real time tuning.
