TPI fit question 1986 Z28
TPI fit question 1986 Z28
Hi. I have a true 305 TPI car with a factory HO motor from the heads down... I have this verified as the original engine and plan to restore it and keep it put away...
Anyhow my question is related to what exact type of block I need to put everything back on with a new motor 350, maybe even 383 ... But I want to keep the year correct accessories and intake TPI .... I have the 9th injector for cold start , and I have the no drinking belt system...
Any advice would be very helpful
Thanks!

Nice looking car! To answer your question, any small block chevy will fit. It all depends on what all you are going to use from your 305. The couple of things you need to be aware of is the fact that the older blocks were 2 piece rear main seal and used a Zero balance flywheel or flexplate where as the newer blocks (I believe 86 and up) are 1 piece rear main seal and use a flywheel or balancer with an offset balance. The block and crank shaft are different for 1 and 2 piece RMS and need to be of the same type. Looking at your motor, you don't have center bolt valve covers which means you have the early TPI manifold. This is a minor problem if you should use center bolt heads as the inboard manifold bolts are at different angles. The holes in the manifold could be drilled to accept the correct angle but if you want to keep your original engine all original then you probably won't want to modify the bolt holes. Pre 87 heads would then be a must or most after market heads are the correct angle for your TPI manifold. The TPI itself is identical to a 350 TPI except for the size of the injectors. There are a few other things that are related to a swap from a 305 to a 350/383 but are not fitment related but more about the tune of the motor. The ESC module and the knock sensors are different between a 305 and a 350/383. The prom is also different due to the onboard redundant fuel system (a.k.a. Limp Mode). You can use your original prom, pull the eeprom chip and replace it with a 350 eeprom to get close to your needed tune or burn/have a chip burned. The Limp Mode will be useless but hopefully you won't need it anyway. Or you could try to find a 350 prom and keep your original prom safe so if you decide you want your car all original again (that's why you're keeping the 305, right?) you can just swap back.
I hope this provides some insight as to what obstacles you face and clear up some questions. If you have more specific questions be sure to ask. HTH!

Your serpentine belt brackets and accessories will fit any sbc, it's the heads that need to have the accessory holes. Some older heads didn't have accessory holes but most newer heads and after market heads have them drilled and tapped. GL!
