165 to 7730 HELP!!!

I am trying to convert from the 165 for the 2.8L to the 7730 for the 3.1L ecm in my 1986 camaro sport coupe. My 165 is pretty much dead. My problem is that looking at https://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/ecm_swap_730/ , and Chilton manuals show different hook ups between the v6s and the v8s.
Also both Chilton and Austinthirdgen.org show a distributor hook up at c7(tan/black) and c8(white). Both c7 and c8 are blank in my harness. The swap directions say to hook up to d4 for the white, but that's blank also.
Has anyone on here done this swap on a V6???

Re: 165 to 7730 HELP!!!

Unless you swapped in the '7165 ECM, that isn't what is in your car. It will be the '7302 ECM. IIRC, there is a wiring pin-out and such in the sticky's.

The "Chilton manual," OK can use it as a jack pad (TomP). But not much more...

Re: 165 to 7730 HELP!!!

Thank you very much! I looked at that article yesterday but must have skimmed it too fast. On another note, is there an advantage of the 749 over the 7730? I'll be going boosted (hopefully tge mttgical 3800 s/c) eventually and i know a lot of boosted guys use the 749.

Re: 165 to 7730 HELP!!!

No advantage to using the '7749. Any code it can run the '7730 can also run.

Re: 165 to 7730 HELP!!!

Thank you very much for your help! One more thing, I now have the car running and running fairly well. Only big issue remaining is I have no data being sent to the aldl. I can retrieve the dtc codes, but if I hook a scanner up to see o2 readings and etc it says to check wiring and grounds because it cant connect. There are 3 wires shown going to the aldl and I believe I have them hooked up properly.
Any other areas you could think to look at?

Re: 165 to 7730 HELP!!!

On the ALDL connector, move the terminal/wire in location E to location M. Those letters are molded into the connector (note that M is opposite A).

Re: 165 to 7730 HELP!!!

One more question(for today at least). I swapped that pin around and got the computer to successfully connect, however it will only show a snapshot with nothing changing. I also have no History tables available. Is this an issue with the swap or the computer?
I am using the "azty1407 88" bin and the $88 xdf and $88 ads.
The values it is seeing are all way off too. Like the -34.75(ish) C coolant temp and the spark advance is being read as something like 1300.

The data could be a chatter packet. Which is also much shorter then a data packet.

Huh? Why would it be reading only the chatter packet, and how do I get it to read properly?

And that is the 64-thousand dollar question. I don't know what needs to be done to get TunerPro to properly data log $88. I do know how to deal with the chatter and get real data being sent. Wrote a program many years ago to do just that. And that was before TP-RT was available.

There is a recent thread on the TPI board where someone is going through the same thing with $88.

One thing to try is to continuously click on the connect icon, sooner or later may get the timing correct and get actual data packets.

Re: 165 to 7730 HELP!!!

I actually possibly fixed it last night. I have been using a tune based on the azty bin in the adapter out of another car with a stock 5 speed memcal. Last night I put the whole combo in my 91 Firebird but that car couldn't read the azty based chip. When I put the chip based off the stock 5 speed memcal (says atty I think on it) the car ran much better and my dad's diagnostic scan tool was able to get actual live data. I'm going to try the data logger again after work and post the results.
could the difference between the ATZY bin and ATTY memcal have been the issue?

Re: 165 to 7730 HELP!!!

Can't find anything on ATTY. The BAWX is the 5-spd equivalent to AZTY (auto).

Re: 165 to 7730 HELP!!!

Ok, I'll look for that, thank you. I was wrong on the letters. Here's the stock memcal where the other one says "ATZY". Do you know what this is for?

Re: 165 to 7730 HELP!!!

That is for an '87 Chevy Celebrity and Pontiac 6000 series cars with the 2.8l engine. Apparently it is a Canadian calibration as it claims it runs in open loop (no closed loop). Which I find strange.

Also, IIRC, those engine ran DIS, not a distributor. If so the spark advance will be way off.

Um ok so questions about how a Canadian memcal for a 2.8 made it into a 91 Firebird that was never registered outside of Wisconsin aside, do you think the bin not matching the stock memcal will cause an issue?

Easy, someone swapped the ECM from a JY car and didn't move the stock MEMCAL over.
