Are ECM's interchangeable from all years 82-92?

Morning all,

I ran into an issue I believe was tied to my ECM, only one of two TBI Injectors fired under certain conditions. When the ECM was moved or adjusted the issue(s) went away. The ECM that came in the car is shown below. I have no way to identify it...

Finally I went to a local yard, found a 91 fbird (VIN # 1G2FS23E2ML213788) w/ engine VIN E for the L03 and grabbed the ECM. The ECM appears to be a 1228746, and it has a PROM that read APTY 2X54. The X represents an unknown # as the plastic housing blocks my complete view. Put this unit in, car ran. I didn't really drive it much so I hadn't noticed anything but now I'm driving it again I noticed it seemed a lot weaker than I recall. While no I'm not getting the surging RPM's, bucking, or loss of 1 injector as I did with the unit above something seems different.

Will this ECM work for my application (Automatic Transmission) so long as I swap PROM's too?

What if I swap PROM's and it still feels week or sluggish?

Don't Judge on the last question but, can loss of transmission fluid make it feel like just doesn't have that get up and go? I lost about a quart or so doing a radiator change but have since started adding it back quart by quart...

To answer your first question, no, the ECMs are not all the same.

As for the reman with the blue label. That is an 12228746 ECM. It also appears to have a Hypertech chip in it. Which will swap over the newer JY ECM.

APTY is for a 5-speed, so don't use it as the TCC lockup will be all wrong.

RBob.

So I've swapped the PROM's and notice very little difference, in fact I've got an intermittent SES Light that's been ongoing. Last time I pulled codes I believe they were O2 Sensor related... I'll check again in about an hour or so.

*Update*

After snagging a AXKT 1113 PROM and installing it (into a 1228746 ECM pulled from a 1990 caprice) I thought of a question... can it be installed into any one of the three 1228746 ECM's i have? Does the PROM Broadcast Code & ECM Broadcast Code have to match?

1. Original - Re-manufactured 1228746 ECM (Unknown Broadcast Code)
2. JY 1228746 ECM pulled from a 91 Firebird (APTY PROM Broadcast Code)
3. JY 1228746 ECM pulled from a 90 Caprice (ATYR PROM Broadcast Code)

A 746 ecm can use any of the bcc you have listed. You can use any bcc that came from a 746 ecm in a 746 ecm only. If you grabbled one from a truck a 1227747 ecm the prom would not interchange. Hope that answers your question .
