Relocating PROM

I want to remove the chip in my Mem-Cal and solder in a ribbon cable then at the other end of the ribbon cable put a ZIF socket in an accessible place where I don't have to pull the ECM to change chips. My question is will there be a problem with EMI or RF? Has anyone done this? I have seen it done here…

EMI, RF, are always a problem.
Having an ecm lose it's mind in traffic isn't a good idea in my book.
They are in use, but, just a little risky in my book.

I tried it on my vette and it set a SYS code everytime I tried. I would switch back to the regular way and no problem at all. Go back again and SYS.

Good luck if you do get it to work, I will be all ears. I'm getting tired of having the computer laying on the floor.

Move the ecm, it seems to be the only way.

Easiest way: desolder the female ECM connectors from an old ECM and make an extension cable with some extra male ECM connectors.

Center console is kinda nice..

Why when I did this did the SYS light come on? I was using a ribbon cable with all the pin to the proper place?

Do they sell shielded ribbon cable? I was thinking of using a shielded cable and grounding both ends and put the chip in a metal box with a detachable cover. The only thing is I need to find some shielded ribbon cable or any other type of cable that will work.

Do you guys think this will work?

I got it to work without grounding and such, but the cable was only about 18" long and it was kinda intermittent. The ECM would stumble with SES code flash every now and then, and it was PROM dependent. I almost think it might have more to do with the amount of capacitance in the ribbon cable wire length & such, but I really don't know.

Maybe with proper shielding and such it'd be OK, but I'd be wondering about it. I think the problem is mostly on the data exertion lines from the EPROM, so maybe concentrate on those guys?

Good luck...

I have an idea Use the shortest length ribbon cable as possible. Then take alluminum foil and wrap it around the ribbon cable.Stop the foil an inch or two from either end.The run ground straps to both ends.If this sounds retarded then just ignore my dumb ***

I tried using a shilded cable, it was long, about 30". It set a hard SES light and ran like crap.
I conclude that interferance isn't the reason, must be dropping data over that long wires.
Some mentioned adding a resister to each leg off the prom built into the cable to lessen the capacitance of the wire but I forget the value he told me.

TTT

Anyone kow the resistance value to add to each wire to lessen the capacitance of the extension?

The new hard drive ribbon cables use a wider cable and every other line is a ground. Maybe this type of setup would work better.
