Knock retard testing, am I off-base?
Knock retard testing, am I off-base?
Ok guys, I'm just getting into chip tuning. Here's my setup: 9:1 compression 350 with S/R torquer heads, moderate cam (XE262, 110 LSA), headers, TPI for now but switching to stealth ram as soon as parts come in (couple weeks). T-56. I'm running '730 ecm.
The first chip I made for this engine I took axxc (305 5-speed) and grafted on the fuel and spark tables from a 350 chip (aujp i think). The spark tables from the 350 bin were considerably more conservative then the 305 ones. I changed the injector size, engine size, disabled vats etc. I'm not running egr but I forgot to disable it in this chip (via the enable temp).
In testing I found that the chip is rich (blms from 108-120, rarely sits at 108 except for idle) and I'm getting knock retard under partial throttle. As much as 12 degrees of it. However, the power I was getting from the engine was terrible, and It felt just like other cars where there for some reason not been nearly enough timing, so I figured maybe the ecm was pulling out knock retard when it shouldnt be. I was initially running 87 octane, but filled up with 94. This didn't change the spark knock. I added some more timing (around 6 degrees, didnt have the light with me) at the distributor, and while the knock retard ammounts stayed around the same, power was much much better. Still not optimal but much closer to where it should be. No audible knock.
It's my thinking that this indicates I'm getting false knock. The engine may have a smallish exhaust leak. Could this be the cause? Would not disabling EGR in the chip cause this? I'm going to be disabling the egr as soon as my burner gets here (forgot it at home this weekend).
Basically, am I on the right line of logic here? I dont want to really mess with the fuel tables until the stealth ram gets here, because that is going to be my final engine setup for a while.
