Glowing Converter
I just put my new engine in about a week ago, in my 89 camaro (MAF). 218/224 112 LSA, Aluminum heads, 1.5 RR, TES headers, new cat, new cat-back, new rotating assembly...etc.
When ideling my BLM goes to 160 suggesting that my engine is running lean, but I can still smell fuel coming out of the exhaust. Trying as hard as it can, the converter ends up glowing red after a short time trying to burn that extra fuel.
Why would my computer dump in more fuel if it's already running rich??
My engine also seems to bog at lower rpm but runs smooth above 2500. Seeing other post about people running a similar setup with the stock chip I've checked over all the normal mechanical causes but just about everything is new.
I'm thinking about adding some timing on the lower rpm side but I'd really like any other suggestions.

Ok, I got this one. This happened to me also and I could not for the life of me figure out why it was adding so much fuel even after I adjusted the VE tables in my 730. The BLM's were still going back to 160 time after time. No matter what I did they still kept creeping up. It turned out to be an exhaust leak right next to the O2 sensor. The pulsing of the exhaust was creating a vacum and sucking fresh air into the exhaust stream. The O2 was reading massive amounts of unburned oxygen and dumping more fuel into compensate. I fixed that leak and everything fell into place.
I would check that even if it's not really audible. Mine started doing it again so I retightened the bolts right there and it stoppped it.
If you're sure you don't have an exhaust leak I would replace the O2 sensor and see if that helps things.
I just reread the post and saw that you have TES headers as do I. Make sure to tighen the bolts that connect the drivers side header and the pipe that runs under the oil pan.

Will an intake leak have the same effect??
Will an exhaust or intake leak cause the computer to run the engine rich and make the converter glow at all times or only at idle??
I've checked already but I'm gong to check again as soon and I get the chance...it's always the obvious things that get you.

My converter was glowing almost all the time. There was a few times that once I got off the freeway the car was smoking so I pulled over and it was bright red. It will be worse at idle though becuase there is less exhaust gas velocity and there isn't any air rushing under the car. So while idling this is wen the most oxygen will get into the exhaust.
Here check out this link, these are the responses I got with my question.
