Burnt my first chip....and it does not work
Well. I am using Win 98, PP II in windows, and flash AT29C256 proms from Craig Moates. The car I was testing on was a 1987 Iroc Z. I know these chips are 32k and the MAF cars are 16k. I saved the bin loaded it and clicked fill buffer with FF's before I burnt it thinking that would put the .bin in the last 16k of the prom. I cranked the car and on came a SES light. It would not read through the jumper at all(No laptop at the time) I put the stock chip back in and it works perfect. When I got back home, I took the prom out, read it and tried to open it with Tunercat. when I did it said that the $ff ecm type needed to be used? What?? And oh yea. The arrow on the chip. what way does it face in the programmer and when it is in the memcal, or does it matter?
Thanks
CHRIS
Thanks
CHRIS

Filling the buffer with FF just clears the whole 32k buffer, not move your PROM code down 16k. You need to reset the offset to a certain value, but since I have SD, I don't know what it is. But I can tell you that Trax has mentioned it in a post on this very subject, just search and you should find it.

Chris,
When in the PP, the notch & arrow should face upward toward the handle. When in the ECM, if using an adapter, they should face away from the handle, or toward the edge of the ECM access hole.
Sounds like you put the BIN in the wrong half of the chip. Why not try the offset approach or the DOS copy approach? It's somewhere in the threads here.
By the way, when reading a chip with FFs or 00s in half of it, then trying to read it in TC or other, keep in mind that you will need to basically split it up again, or pull a few strings with the read bounds.

I use the dos copy approach to correct this problem like Craig suggested. Basically you just make the 16k file into a 32k file.
Copy /b file.bin+file.bin newfile.bin
I had the same problem, did a search here, and that seemed to be the best solution for me.

It still don't understand why people don't use the search feature. After 2 minutes of searching ....
