Pics of my ECM bench

Just a couple pics of my 730/749 ECM test bench I am building. Still have much to do but should have it done in a few days. I used an old 165 case and made a new top, and will use GM connectors on both side of the adapter cable to the ECM. cheers, Bob

Looks good!

Do I see the design schematics under the case in the first picture?

About time, LOL
I guess I'll have to take mine apart and get some brasso for it...

Nother one of them, a couple for the 165s, and mix in a little imagination and might just be amazing what turns up...

It'd be fabulous to have some patched code to get rid of some of the oem stuff.

Like in the GN code they have a TCC timing retard when applied that they decay out, then highway spark mode, then some boost spark that rfers to a table that's not even there!. Then all kinds of TCC delay and stuff. With that all gone, it makes a huge difference in the way the car drives.

OK, rant off about code changes,
for the moment...

Hehe, I hear ya Didn't plan on it but it wouldn't be hard to adapt my bench to any ECM, just need to build the correct cable to go between. Might need a few additional switches too. Yeah thats the kids doodles on my work bench. They have scribbled all over the anti static mat. Will post some new pics later. cheers, Bob

Thanks guys, I might be a bit slow on the code side of things but I can wire things...15 years installing car audio and a retired IASCA Installation judge, all things wire is up my alley. Just need to refresh my digital from tech school. I didn't plan it but its turning out to by a "generic" box. Just use the ECM specific jumper cable and flip a switch or 2 and go. Decided to get a bit **** and design the 5v supply and the timing circuits, also a 2 transistor ALDL on one board. See how well I can etch one up here.. lol Guess I have close to 20 hours in it sofar but its been worth it. Tell Doc not to waste his time on the drawings, I already know what it means... Just another car nut. hehe. cheers, Bob

Well I have finished the harness, just need to solder on the DB-9 to the gray cable and thats it. Still drawing up the board and hope to etch it later this weekend. Won't be long now, cant wait to fire it up. cheers, Bob

Not talking to ya anymo...
You missed the cruise-in, at Kettering last night.
Had 6 GNs/Ttypes, no a DIY Promer other then me and the lil guys, lots of TB.Com guys thou...

Doc is saying to cut you some slack since you do have a bench running. Bashful's nodding his head too.....

And by Board, you mean what?
For RPM, and VSS?.

If you want to double check things, swing by with it asssebled, and I do have an accurate Pulse generator and frequency meter if you want to get a presise handle on what you have.
If you have an ALDL connector, I have diacom, and we can run it up, if you want to double check you diagnostic stuff against what I have.

< yeah, wanted to go but we had company over. Weather permittin I'll go next Fri or whenever the next Fri you go, I'll bring the box if it done or not.

< thanks guys.. LOL

< Going to draw up a dual timer for the VSS and RPM using a 556 add the divider/LED for the ignition and quasi O2 feedback, also have a 2 transistor ALDL verter and a 7805 5V supply. Figured it would give me an excuse to learn EAGLE layout software, and I'll etch it here, who knows if it works out maybe I'll have the local board house make me up a dozen or so.

< Didnt figure on having one, but I do have one here, could add it on no probs.. Hmm I have a freq generator here and a scope. But yeah once its up we could do that. Thx Grumpy
cheers, Bob

Well its Sunday night and time for another update on the bench.

After several nights fussing with some layout software I decided to layout the board on paper.. lol What I have done is combine a 2 trans ALDL, a 5 volt supply and a LM556 timer for RPM signal and VSS signal. Just finished etching the bottom of the board, need still to drill and layout the top/etch, but its coming along slowly. Hopefully first runs later this week.

Looked for you Friday night Grumpy, figured it was a long shot with your visit and the weather, pretty good turn out til the rains came...

Well I've rambled long enuf... cheers, Bob

Finished the circuit board and wired it up and as Murphy would have it the 556 is bad.. So on to plan 2, fired up my old frequency generator to supply the RPM and jumpered in my ALDL and fired up the bench. laptop linked up right away and everything "seems" to be working other than the VSS. Can vary all the sensors and "rev" it up. Got a few bugga boos to correct, all the pots are counterclockwise and the SES flashes now and again, but shes close. Once I gets the buggers out, this thing is sweet..
