winaldl problem...what am i doing wrong?

I just finished making my cable this weekend, and I went today to try to run the car and learn something. This is the first time I do anything like this, so pardon my ignorance. I went under the passenger side dash to the general area where the ecm is and found what I would think is the aldl cable. It does not look like the one in this picture:

The one in my car has the A through G connectors all in a row, and has about 6 more connectors on a second row. All this goes conencted to a white plug with about 13 or 14 wires.I think I am looking at something else entirely, but I don't see anything that resembles this connection at all. I went ahead and tried to run winaldl with everything hooked up to the A, B, and E terminals like they should be (they are labeled on the connector), but the car won't start at all without the plug connected, which would have to be disconnected to hook anything up to the terminals.

Can anyone help me figure out what I am doing wrong? I really need to learn how to use winALDL quick.

Your brown wire needs a resistor going to the next terminal to the left.

Dam, I feel stupid. I just did a search on google and found what I did wrong. I didn't hook anything up to the aldl connector, i was trying to use the ecm/dash connector. I wasn't thinking at all, and just tried to use the first plug i found that was kinda similar. That was pretty stupid.

Ok, now I just tried to run winaldl again but this time I actually used the ALDL connector.

It did nothing. I hooked up the data cable to terminal E, a 10k resistor across terminals A and B, and the ground cable to terminal A. I tried changing com ports (I quit the program and opened it after each change), and nothing. It won't read anything.
I'm confident that I built the cable correctly, as I triple checked everything before and after I soddered (spelling?). Is there something I'm overlooking again?

Plug your lap top in to 110V Ac power. I had a problem getting the note book to supply the 12volts needed to operate the cable until I plugged it in to AC. I'll be getting an inverter for the car soon.

I haven't been able to get my hands on a laptop, so I'm using a desktop for now. I know that means I can only run winALDL while the car is parked and running, but its all I can do right now. I'm going to double check the cable again tomorrow if I get a chance and give it another try. Hopefully it'll work this time.

Your computer might not be supply the correct voltage (12v) to run WINALDL. Don't rely on that for the supply voltage, use another source for 12 volts.
