I need help with my WinALDL cable ASAP!!! Please!!!
I'm really at my ropes end with my car since I rebuilt it. It has a nasty loss of power above 1500 and I need to get my WinALDL to work on it so I can see the data.
I already did the cable 3 times. The first two times I did it just like the schematic and the written instructions in another post said and it didn't work. The third time I decided to change what pins the various connections went to because mine didn't look like the one in the picture in the article. Before I got my hands on a laptop I made the cable and I accidently used a male DB9 connector. The laptop is setup to receive a female connector so I had to use a male to male adapter inbetween the laptop and cable. This is why I thought switching my connections would help.
I also have tried each time with the 10K resistor in the ALDL connector and without it in the ALDL connector.
Somebody please give me a suggestion. I need to get this data tonight so I can get my car running right this week.

Here comes my computer ignorance......what in the world does that last reply mean??
I figured that making the cable would be a snap. I mean come on 2 resistors and a transistor for ***'s sake!!
Someone help me figure out what the hell is going on here. I want my car running right!!!

make sure you dont have the trnsistor upside down.the 165 ecm is 8192 buad i dont think itll work with the single transistor circut. youll need the 2 transistor circut. and that works sometimes.

Woah.......what two transistor circuit?? The only cable diagram I saw had 1 transistor.
I'm fairly certain I have it in the correct way....the diagram on the package looked like this:
------
ll ll
ll ll
------
l l l
l l l
l l l
l l l
E B C
I assumed that the diagram meant that with the rounded side of the transistor up the wires were in the emitter, base, collector order. Was I mistaken??

for the 8192 buad ecms youll need the moates software. heres the link.

Hmmm...I think it's safe to say that I'm thoroughly confused. I guess I should have paid better attention in high school electronics class. How do I know what baud ECM I have and if it's not the 160, howcome WinALDL says it supports 86-90 TPI cars??
Also the scematic for the 8192 baud connector shows the wires from the transistor in the opposite order than I perceived them on the packaging diagram I had. Maybe I should try reversing my transistor tomorrow night???
Otherwise I may have to just take it to a dyno shop next weekend. (Not that it would be all that bad to have my car dyno tuned anyway
)

) im not really sure why it supports the 7165 ecm youhave. i wondered that to as i have winaldl. i know yr ecm has different communications needs than a 160 buad becuase its 8192.so you need to get the right cable. they can be purchased here.

So hold on......do I need a different cable or not??? All of these numbers are confusing the hell out of me!! I'm a damned finance major.....we deal with different kinds of numbers.

Just so you all know, the 2 transistor circuit works fine. So does the 1 Transistor. That's what I use with Moates software on my 87 IROC and it works beautifully. It's an EASY circuit to make.

I Got It!!!!!
Thank you guys. I got the cable to work last night!! The transistor was in backwards!! I still think the package was labeled wrong. I even think I found my major problem tonight using the WinALDL software. Now I think I'll send my chip back with the BLM tables for some fine tuning!!

The TPI ECM (1227165) transmit data both at 160 and 8192 baud. WinALDL reads the 160 baud data and Craig Moates software reads the 8192 baud data.
The 8192 baud will read more variables from the ECM, and it will read it a higher rate.
