ALDL interface with Windows XP

I have a Win. XP Compaq notebook computer. Recently I ordered an ALDL interface cable not knowing that my computer would not be able to read serial devices. I am trying to find an adapter to go from serial to USB that is XP compatible. I have tried www.pricewatch.com and all of the local retail stores and haven't had any luck. Nothing I have found is XP compatible. Does any one know where I may be able to find what I need? All sugestions will be appreciated.

What ECM do you have? You might be able to use WinALDL. I run XP pro and it works great. Best of all it's FREE.

Ive had the same issue....you can do 2 things make your notebook a dual boot and use win 98....or you can get a pcmcia to serial on ebay for like 50 bux that is what i did...the usb to serial does work in win 98 just not XP...the other nice part about the pcmcia to serial is that it works in dos...so that means you can run Craig Moates software

There was another thread along this topic line. It was determined that even if you were able to get a serial to USB adaptor it probably wouldn't work because windows wouldn't assign a Com port to it, since it is USB, and you need a Com port for any of the serial interface software to work.

What you need to do is check E bay and find a nice, older Laptop with like a P100 or so processor. This will help keep the cost down, and none of the software needs anything real fast to run anyway.

Actually Morley, I own a usb to serial adaptor and you can adjust all the parameters just like a normal com port. I have used the usb to serial adaptor successfully in WIN98 but due yo its buggy nature I perfer to use the pcmcia to serial card in an XP environment. Both work fine in my experience..comes down to cost vs platform vs preference. any questeion feel free to email me

Have you tried right clicking on the shortcut, going to the compatibility tab and selecting either windows 95 or windows 98se? That usually works when trying to get custom programs running in newer OS's.

I found a Belkin adapter on their website (model F5U103) for $60 and you can download the XP driver for it. Do you think this will work?

I got the serial to USB adapter. Now I can't get WinALDL to communicate with the correct USB port.

Any Suggestions?
