TBI to 165 TPI gone haywire
This is for mrt89rs's car, so I'm going to try to remember all the details.
He used to have TBI on his 305 RS. He bought a used TPI unit, including the harness off someone else. It's a stock throttle body, 165 computer with a 350 chip (don't know the letters off the memcal itself), 22# injectors.
The car used to idle for awhile and then just die on its own, with the IAC counts maxing out at 160 and the injector pulse going well over 4 ms. I noticed he didn't have all the bolts in the runners, so I recommended he fix the vacuum leak he obviously had. Last night the car idles fairly good, but if you give it the slightest bit of pedal, the car dies with the IAC going to 160 and the pulse going over 4 ms. At idle the MAF is reading 7 gr/sec, the pulse is 2 ms (which I think is high, especially for a 305 with 350 injectors. The O2 sensor reads 444 mV constantly and never gets "ready".
My guess is that there's still a vacuum leak in the system that the MAF sensor is not accounting for, and it drives the injectors up to compensate, and dies. My experience is strictly with SD/730 on a 350, so I'm not sure how much my guess is worth. It's obvious that he should burn a PROM for it, but that's not an option right this minute.
Any ideas? Can this car become driveable, or is the chip going to have that much of an effect? He's on his third week without the car and thinking about going carbed.
