165 Tuning procedures
Hi guys,
I've been registered for about a year and have been reading here for about six months more than that. I have read and read and read and have learned alot. I have gotten pretty good ( I think) at using the search function to find out lots about individual topics, this has really improved my understanding. I finally started burning proms 2 weeks ago and am very happy with the few bins I have burned so far. I have a 1988 Corvette convertible with stock converter, 2.73's, 700R4, cut air lid, ported and siamesed stock plenum. I am using the ARAP bin with no changes other than VATS, injector constant and fan switch temps.
I was getting BLMS between 140 and 150, so I used the % method to adjust my injector constant which has resulted in most BLM cells being 124-132, but a few are richer than that, none are leaner. The few that are off are around 110-115 or so.
I actually get fewer knock counts with the ARAP than I got with the stock bin. I haven't even begun to adjust timing yet. I am having a bit of difficulty getting a grip on some of the interrelationships and the sequence of tuning despite hours of reading search results. I, and I suspect many others from many of the topics I have read, would really appreciate a synopsis of sorts of what to do first, second, third, etc, and which fields are most appropriate to effect changes. Something along the lines of
"First you should tune idle using changes in a, b, c, when that is done tune for light throttle using d, e, f. If there are a few cells that are off use this technique (or don't bother). Once idle and light throttle cruising are within parameter X, then tune WOT with this technique and spark using this."
I think you get the picture. I know that many of you feel that there are too many people who come here and ask for the answers without giving the thought and time finding the answer on their own. Many questions have been answered literally hundreds of times and asked hundreds more and I understand that it is frustrating. A unified comment on MAF tuning by those of you who have had success would be very helpful. I don't want someone else to tune my car, I have fun doing it myself.
Please let us know what methods and sequence you used to tune your MAF set up. If your method is different than someone else’s please post yours, but also please respect that they have had success and don't bash or discount their method. I have seen the "adjust maf tables v don't adjust maf tables" argument too many times.
Thanks guys, I have learned alot here and love the spirit of hotrodding by discovery and experimentation that you all have.
