This is killing me!
I have a laptop, and I am trying to buy a cable to connect the laptop to the ECM. I want to order something in plan English... "Cable for 85-89 TPI car," or something of the sort. They all say RS232 to ALDL converter or something like that.
Please, which one do I need for my 1989 IROC with L98?

Car: '89 GMC Pickup
Engine: 383 SBC Stealth Ram
Transmission: 700R4/VIG 3200
OBDI-style RS232/ALDL Cable, fully tested, molded connector (rectangular style 12-pin)
Fits up to -1993 Y-body, -1994 F-body, -1995 B-body, and many other 1986-1995 GM vehicles
That's the one I have and it cost $95.00. It's worked with everything I've tried it on which is, '85 870 TPI, 86-89 MAF 165 TPI, 90-92 SD 730 TPI and a '88 pickup truck with a 747 with Winaldl, (I think it was what I used). Also, I've reprogrammed '94-'95 051 and 333 LT1 ECM's (on the bench) with it also.
IT works with Tunercats '94/'95 EE and EEB programming software. It works with TTS Datamaster for 730 and the EE and EEB for scanning, and it works with every version of Craig Moates software that I've downloaded in the last year or so.
It's 15' long and is very professionally build with molded connectors.
It cost more than building your own but it works, everytime!
Email him, he'll help you sort it out.
