Basic but neccessary Q's from a newbie
This is my first post on here, but i have been reading what you guys have had to say for about two years now. My best friend got an 89 rs when he turned 16, crashed it and has a 92 z28 right now. He blew the motor in the z28 and is replacing the 305 with a fairly hot rodded 355. he is tight on cash and i have a good combination of computer knowledge, mechanical ability, and ability to learn pretty quick. He needs a custom PROM, my buddy has a programmer, i have the stock BIN. I have read Trax's intro, and a lot of stuff on DIY-EFI.org, and some other scattered websites. My questions begin with,
1. im pretty sure my buddys car is SD, but how do i tell?
2. When editing the BIN, which ECU do i choose (i.e. 747)?
3. is there a way to have a basic formula for tuning the chip. for example, adjust all the constants first, then for max spark multiply by 15%, for spark bias cold multiply by 12%, etc. ?
4. is there a basic set of parameters to make the car driveable from the shop?
5. Do you guys think i am out of my league here trying this?
*Any and all of your help is appreciated in advance*

1. If it is a 92 Z28 then it is Speed Density. Look for a mass air flow meter before the throttle body. If you only see a straight rubber air duct then it is Speed density.
2. That car will have a '730 computer and use the 8D definition file.
3. Start out with the AUJP bin. It will have the cylinder constant for a 350, but you will have to change the injector constant if you are still running the 305 19 lb/h injectors. That is the best bin to start w/ since you are switching from a 305 to 350. That should get the car driveable, but far from perfect. You're likely to be running rich at idle and lean up top if it is modified w/ aftermarket cam etc, but there is no generic formula to get that tuned right. Look at Traxon's "730 Part throttle tuning" sticky and "Bruce Pleacan's tuning tips" at the GM-ecm site.
4. It should be driveable, but far from perfect. How hot is the motor?
5. Out of your league? Not if you're willing to put time into reseach. Thirdgen.org can tell you almost anything you want to know if you spend the time looking.
