Knock sensor retrofit

I bought a couple of knock sensors at the junk yard today, and want to put one on my engine. I already have the amplifier module hooked in, with the blue wire ready to hook to. I am using th 1227747 ECM.

I noticed that when I removed the knock sensor from the 350 at the junk yard, it was screwed into the water jacket on the block. Is it necessary that it be in the water jacket (sound conduction through water or something)? Or can I just run it into any threaded hole in the block and have it work.

I presume that it should work as well on a 454 as on a 350.

Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks,

John.

Don't presume too much, the knock sensors are "tuned" for a particular engine's wall thickness. Thats why there is a different P/N for 305's & 350's.
And yes, I do believe it needs to be installed into a water jacket, again part of the tuning done when they are made.

I guess I will check to see if there is one for the 454. Perhaps one from a Gen 5 or 6 might work on mine. Might be worth trying.

Thanks.
