Several have tried, no one has succeeded as far as I know.
Well, I take that back, there was someone here that made a 6" extension that supposedly worked fine. That's not long enough in my mind to really be an extension.
What we need is a couple feet so you could place a ZIF socket under the ashtray cover. That would be cool and would even sell quite well.

Use a Romulator, and all you'll see is the serial cable. The ribbon cable to the box is about a foot long, but I've used as long as 12' of serial cable with no problems.

I gave it an attemp a while back, using ribbon cable. I would get intermittant SES lights and sometimes it would work ok.
I fugured most of the problems were coming from interference and not so much lost signal/signal strength. I did not take it as far to get shielded cable etc, so manybe that is the answer.
Perhaps if Grumpy was sucessful, he could share with us more specifically what type of cable he used. Sure would be nice to be able to put the computer back up under the dash, especially after 2yrs of it being on the pass. floor

I am looking into building an adapter that will plug into the memcal like Craigs, and a LCD display switcher Unit. I want to be able to plug into the switcher unit via USB, or RS232 and re flash the prom on the adapter(while the car is off). If I pursue this venture I would try to plan for future emulation.
But first things first, I am building a switcher that will be compatible with Craigs adapter(P2, P3).
Features-
1-Select Bank size-This feature will auto adjust the addr line config and allow access to the appropriate number of banks (depends on bank size). I have also added provisions for control of a fifth addr line that would allow you to have 32 progs in 128K mode. I don't think that The P-3 allows use of the fifth addr line right now.
2-Will allow you to name each bank (13 chars).
3-Will allow you to scroll through banks and select bank to run.
Pros,
1- It will display the name(or description) of the bank you are running so you no longer need to remember what bank does what.
2-It will be opto-isolated from the switcher unit.
3-Pending testing it will probably have a small round cable going to the adapter.
4-It will remember the bank setting.
5-You will be able to put it into power save mode(it will turn the lcd off until a button is pushed"
Cons.
1-It will require a seperate power line to 12V.
This has been a real fun project for me.
I am not sure how to package(physical) it though. what would be a universal fit? Dash slot? little box to put where ever? Let me know what might fit most apps.
