Ecm calibration question

I bought the Craig Moates adapter with the ZIF to install flash chips in my 89 5.7 TPI firebird and I have one question. When I install it in my ECM I attach the original memcal to craig's adapter to retain the limp home stuff, but why/how does the ecm know which information to read, the original memcal or the new chip in the zif? Thanks for any help. -John

Look at the actual traces on the adapter, half go to the old memcal, and half are to the ZIF. The prom on the old memcal doesn't connect to anything.

That makes sense, thanks. I have been reading FOREVER and I finally have the cash to start burning.
