Hard starting cars read this...

I just want to bring this to the forefront, not claiming to do anything that anyone else has never done. This worked VERY VERY well for me and I wanted to share it with you all.

After last years 350 mods to my car I was pleased with everything except from that point till recently the car started hard and always wanted to stall right after starting. It seemed to crank and crank and crank. I quickly realized that if you floored the car during the starting it would fire rather quickly. But revving an engine right off start is less than a healthy this for it. I got to know the car pretty well, and was able to minimize the rev with antisipating the start.

Recently I aquired a Romulator. Not absolutely necessary for this, but sure did make it easier. While sitting in my office watching it rain outside the day after getting it I was disappointed in the fact I wasn't going to be able to test out the new equipment. That when I decided to take it out that night, in my garage and see if I could get this car to start easier.

I knew all along what tables needed adjusting, but it never was high on the radar when I got a free moment to tune.

I went out and this is the method I used. Per an article a long time ago I had already set the first 8 or so cells in the crank pulse ref tables to .5. This helped the stock config car quite a bit, so I decided to stay with that.

I set my digi dash to metric to ease of comparing degree celsius to that of the tunercat tables. The hard starting was primarily after the engine heat soaked for a while ~15 sec or so, and from then on it needed to be floored to start.

So I got the car up to 80*C and opened up the tables. I went to crank pulse fuel vs coolant. Located the 80* cell and began reducing the value little by little. With each change you need to shut the car off and then obviously restart to see if its getting better or worse. Immediately it started better. As I figured that I was getting too much fuel on cranking and the throttle opening was leaning it out. With the romulator, you could do this changing of values as quick as you can start and stop the car. With chip I would suggest you burn a bunch of them with different settings and then start at one point and keep interchanging them till you get to a point it starts getting worse. Then fine tune from there.

I have my car now where I have reach through the window and turn the key if working out side of it and it fires on the first crank, no matter how long or the temp the car is at. For the other cells in the table I just smoothed them out. A more extensive tuning of each degree setting could be done, but I have not experienced a hard start yet. If I do, you can bet I will use that method corresponding to that value.

It should be noted that you will also see other tables refering to crank pulse. These other tables can also be used to make a changes, but the coolant should be though of as a global changer then the ref pulse multiplier should be used to fine tune. I sorta did it in reverse, but if you would run out of resolution with the coolant tables then you need to regroup and set the other table.

Its really quite simple to get the car to start like a dream, I could kick myself for no doing it sooner.

Also I noticed that the car runs much much smoother after idle now.

Well like I said, I just wanted to share my experience with you all. Maybe if someone would have posted a thing a year ago expressing how easy it was to get it to start correctly, I would have had more ambition to get out and correct mine. Perhaps someone did and I just missed it. Anyways good luck!

Thanks man! My car has been starting a little hard since the mods went on. I ended up pulling back to base timing to minimize my problem. Now that my chips will heopfully work right, I can burn the crank fuel tables to lwoer values and reset base timing to where it should be. This day is going great so far...

It will work out great for you. I love to just hit the key and bam it starts....cranking it and then a stall is rather embarrassing, especially with chicks around

Or even worse, a backfire... Kills the mood for a romp in the sack, or a run down the strip both.

Good info but I thought it was common knowledge. I did it the hard way (SWAG) a couple months ago. I wound up using .3 for the first 2 ref pulses and .25 from there on out, .5 was just too rich for me, you could smell the gas from the exhaust on the first start.

This was discussed here https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...ighlight=crank and in another thread I can't locate now.
