My new TPI installation (SD) is in and running. Since I am a cheapskate, I built the harness myself and installed a 727 ecm (weatherpak) in a wheelwell behind the splashpan where idst should remain fairly dry. So I got some water on the harness while cleaning, and it then would barely run for a couple of hours till it dried out. There are splices in the wiring to the ecm so it is obviously moisture caused. When it was running badly, it would surge badly, start then quickly die, miss a lot, etc. with the check engine light flashing on and off randomly. So I plugged in my laptop using Craig's software and took a bunch of data while it was belching and the only thing that looked out of line was it showed engine rpm going all over the place....in one instance from 250 to 3200 in .1 seconds. In reality it was probably bouncing around 1000 or so till it died.
So here's the question: It looks to me like the pulse data from the distributor to the ecm has gone haywire when it got wet. Would that cause the symptoms? Im thinking that if the injectors are firing like its at 3000rpm and its only at 1000 that cant be good...right?
