ECM error

I've been trying to get my car working after an engine swap. With the key on and engine off, the fans come on and I'm unable to connect with Moates software. With the ALDL jumped I'm unable to even get the check engine light to flash codes. The light just stays on. I'm using a moates adapter and I've tried 2 different memcal all with the same problems. I bought a new ecm from autozone, still no help. The speedometer doesn't work so does that mean the vss is bad or is the problem with the ecm preventing it from working? Would a bad vss stop the ecm from sending codes? What would prevent the ecm from working corrrectly?

I have a 355tpi, 730 ecm, sd, 5-speed. I was thinking that the pocket programmer was buring incorrectly, I'm using their old 1.34 software with windows xp. But I tried using an old prom from Performance resource and I still get no readings.

You say you're trying to get your car working, but the speedo doesn't work (which won't stop the engine from running). Will the engine run at all?

A bad VSS is most likely to give you a problem with stalling as you coast to a stop- it won't stop the engine from running. It could light the SES light though (not on ECM I'm familiar with), and it will store a code.

Did your car originally come with a 730?

The engine starts and runs, though very rough. I'm sure it's in limp home mode and not running off my burned chip. I have to goosing it to keep it lit.

The car is originally a 92 5.0tpi with the 730.

Bad grounds? I read where the ecm is supposed to be ground to intake manifold. I don't see any wires that meets that despription on my intake.

Its a prom issue, the ecm doesnt recognize the program you burned or something. I had this same issue until I found a prom correct for my car (almost) I still havent fixed the speedo issue.

Look into your programming on the prom.

The prom was the problem. I was using an old Performance Resource prom as a tester and as the starting base. I guess after two years of it sitting on my shelf, it partially erased. I reburnt a couple proms using a different staring bin and no problems. Thanks for your help.
