'747 tuning for warm and cool weather
I know I'm leaning on the board pretty hard here with a bunch of posts lately, but this stuff is just too fun not to play with! I'm hooked!
I'm running a '747 on a semi-hot 327. As the weather starts to cool, I'm noticing a *big* difference in the behavior of the motor between the cool of the morning (in the 60's) and the warm of the afternoon (in the 90's). I'm talking closed-loop. When at similar coolant temps, I can get it to idle sweetly in the afternoon, then it stalls at stops the next morning. I know the 8746 (which I started with) uses a IAT sensor, and the '747 does not, but I can't believe it *has* to behave this way. Are there any tuning "tricks" I can use to get this thing right? I'm running about 16.5 deg at idle (with the timing table pretty flat), my BPW's are in the ballpark, and I'm at about 45 kPa at 800 RPM. The stall-saver has been kicked up to 750 catch / 800 release, but it doesn't seem to want to work in the cool as well as it does in the warm. I've done some searches in the archives here, but it seems there's no hard-and-fast rules about different temps for '747s. I've done some fiddling with a bunch of parameters for the IAC, which is working (more-or-less) though still isn't perfect. Should I consider digging up another 8746 from the boneyard? (I managed to maul the first one).
