Hack Articles?

Is there anywhere that can show me how to use a hack to maybe create new ECU items? Or anywhere that explains how to change or edit ECUs? This area has always been out of reach for me and I would just like to learn more.

Have you tried opening the .ecu file with a word processing editor?.

ie open word pad, and then open file, select your .ecu and look at it. If it appears in normal text then have at it.

I don't use .ecu stuff, so this might be wrong, it's just since no one else took a stab at it, I'm suggesting what works on some other stuff.

you can create edit maipulate the ECU files with notepad actually. the hardest part is figuring out the hex to engineering unit converions. thats the trikest part of it all. other then that its not so bad.

Take a matching ecu and open it in wordpad. Then take that matching hack and open it in acrobat since thats usually the format. Every item in the ecu will have a hex location on it. If you do a search through the hack you should be able to match the exact hex and what it does and its exact calculation from hex to real world numbers.

You don't need Wordpad if you are using Mangus' TunerPro- it's got a built in ECU editor.

There's an old article by Grumpy at ECM Guy's site- click here, and you can see something about how the hex numbers relate and PROM algorithms work out. You click on "Guest Expert- Bruce's page" It may be too technical for what you want, but there is plenty of meat in it.

I've got into trouble using a word processor to edit an ECU file- you'll soon see if you've added problem code with yours though (I think Notepad works on small ECU's?). As I recall, Tunerpro ECU's end up a lot bigger than standard because of the comment capability in the Tunerpro editor.

Check with Mangus and you'll get better than my shallow understanding.

Thanks guys, That helped me out a lot. I just needed a little direction. I still have some to learn but at least now I have a better understanding.
