Determining Knock...

Okay, since I only got a few responses to my previous post about my getting lots of spark retard in a confined RPM range I will raise this question.

How does one determine where knock is coming from, if it is not audible?

Maybe I don't have any knock, but then why does the timing retard?

Thank you...

it could be something, either on the valve train or elsewhere, that is being picked up by the sensor and interprited by the module as knock even though its not. There is also the possibility that there is electrical interfierence causing the ecm to retard the timing. The sensor is easily fooled by other mechanical noises, so its possible that its not knock. You could always jsut pull lots of timing out around that area where it gets lots of counts and see if it goes away. When the ecm is in control, though, its hard to hear it. With a full stock exaust I could hear when it had occasional pre-ignition knock under sudden load but with an aftermarket exaust, the sound is completly drowned out.

Edit: i think somewhere i have a diagnostics chart forthe KS, ill see of I can post it.

The Knock Sensor is just an sound detector. Any noise of the right frequency can set it off. Bad Alternator bearings, bad serpentine belt, exhaust rattle, lifter noise, are all possible sources of sounds that can trigger the knock sensor.

But, your knock was only generated when the CCP was activated. I'd relook exactly what you got going on there, maybe a split hose or something.

Good point.

If the knock sensor is picking up a mechanical sound, what could I do to eliminate that? I thought about wrapping Teflon tape around the threads. When I installed it, I used the liquid Teflon sealant. Couldn't hurt to try I guess.

Yeah, I am going to try very hard to figure that out this week when I have a chance. Do you think it, CCP, can be turned off in the PROM?
I have read in searches that lots of guys don't even have it on the car anymore. I guess I will try that, couldn't hurt...
