proper use of wide band 02

can anyone explain what is the tuning procedure with a wide band 02? Does the unit being offerred with group purchase have any direction as to how to tune using it? or are we presumed to be proficient before purchase? i would assume there are carbed cars using it as well as us EFI guys. Obviously it has a role in WOT/PE tuning when one is certain you are in PE. But can it be used to tune pumpshot/accell enrichment as well? when in closed loop the 02 sensor provides the 14.7 and we accept that. now i understand the closed loop can be disabled and then we run open all the time at (richer?) A/F ? would the WB be of help here to tune outside of 14.7/1? can you direct me to a thread that covers the ABC's of WB02 ? I did not see a sticky. contemplating adding name to list. 7747/TBI/speed density.

It's a tuning tool.
It will allow you getting estimates of where you are AFR wise.
You still have to measure performance to see what's working but you get an idea if you adjustments to make say WOT richer are actually working.

Yes, it makes all the difference in setting up the AE stuff. especially with a LED display like Bruce Roe offers. Being able to see what's going on makes all the difference, at least to me, in seeing how to set up the MAP/LV8 vs TPS AE stuff. Thou it takes developing a knack to see it all.

Since the AFR numbers vary by engine, you can't nor should you tune to get a specific number, it's a matter of learning what your engine wants, hence there are no suggested AFRs as being correct. For instance, my car like 11.5-11.8 AFR for WOT, and truck likes, 13.2. The car at cruise likes 13.2, and the truck does best at 15.3.

How did you go about detemining what they like best?

At WOT you measure trap speed.

Cruise, TPS opeing for a given MPH, MPG, coolant temp, oil pressure, are indicators.

Idle, operating temp, IAC counts for a given RPM, at a given min idle air.

AE, about what keeps the engine generally slightly richer then stoich. The degree varies upon engine.

And for each of the above, plug readings.
