A lot of knock, a lil timing

Wassup fellas?
I advanced my timing just 4* across the board on my main spark table (which is equivalent to advancing it mechanically, correct?)
When i did this i was getting a huge amount of knock between 1000 and 2200 rpm and 55-85 MAP.
I backed the timing out 2* which greatly improved the knock counts (although i still have some).
Is 4* really that much? Im using 91 octane (hey im in cali, its all we got). What else could i be doing wrong? This is my first attempt at spark crap.
Thanks,

Ken

Down low 4 degrees is a lot.

What I normally do is take out 3-4 degreees across the board. Then below the stall speed and for about 200-400 rpm above I work on getting the launch I want. Once I have that set I lock the trans in high gear (3rd) and add spark to one row at a time until I have the spark that provides the fastest time through that location with no detonation. You will have to read plugs looking for small silver or purple ***** on the ceramic. No ***** are allowed. If you start from the bottom and work towards the upper range measuring the whole range you end up with the curve that makes you the fastest while going through the whole range. When you are done run through the whole run (all gears)to insure no detonation.
