Romulator and USB 2 Serial (COM) Port adaptors
Romulator and USB 2 Serial (COM) Port adaptors
From reading here it sounds like there may be some USB-2-Serial adapters out there that don't work. I'm guessing that some are due to the driver problems (that are supposed to now be fixed) in WinXP.

You should expect that the software supplied with a USB2Serial adapter will register the COM port with the OS (look in the device manager of your OS). If it won't – it isn't going to work.

Hope some of you can help the next guy - I would like to make a list - if you have a USB2Serial adapter - tell us 5 things
Does it work?
Manufacturer
Model
driver version
and what Operating system you have.

Here is what I bought.
It was one off ebay.
Does it work- no, it loads up fine but does not set a com port number. It loads as a HID and a virtual port.
MFR- China
Model- ? cypress
Driver- cypress virtual port, cypress semiconductor 9-17-2002
driver file details- WDMMDMLD.VXD, microsoft 4.10.2224
HID--com device, hidcom.sys, cypress semiconductor 0,0,0,15
OS- Win 98
also loaded it in XP which it did not use a driver from the supplied disk.
I'll Go second.
I am running radio shack usb to serial in a tosh laptop.
Its works great with romulator(both cats tuner and tunerpro RT)
Yes when the cable is plugged into the USB it will show under device manager.
Running under WinXP
Drivier verson is win2k (floppy came with cable)
I use this cable also with some other hobbies(programmers, and the LM1 wibeband O2)
fyif-Just plugging in the cable should show a display under device manager.
I have had zero luck with ALDL monitoring though. Datamaster, moates, tunerpro RT ALDL.....I know usb cable is good so not sure whats up. I can link with diacom and its cable. I purchased a fully assmbled OBD1 AKM cable. I have read every post on this on TGO.
I have not tried booting to win98 yet.
Sorry off topic. But I mention this for those buying the cable for ALDL purposes and having zero luck. I am there in that case also.

I bought a socket communications pcima to serial card and it works great with datamaster and the romulator. Here is the link to the product http://www.socketcom.com/product/SL0707-078.asp it does cost more than a usb to serial setup though.

That's what we are trying to figure out.
Thanks,
Datamaster for sure and probably the other scan programs will not work with a USB/Serial adapter. They must be on a real Serial port. Cats programs will run on either. I have an old IBM Thinkpad running Datamaster on the only serial port it has and a Romulator running on the Radioshack USB/Serial adapter. The setup works perfect, never had a glitch from day one.
