Combating Knock

After a few data logs I am in the process of trying to get rid of any knock the engine gets. I have converted the car to MAP and have used the 7730 knock sensor along with all the correct gear.

I have a 86 IROC 305 TPI and the chip I started off with was from a 1992 Z28 305TPI camaro. The BLMs are very close to perfect all around with not much deviation from 128 maybe +- 5 each way.

I have also taken away 2deg spark advance from across the board but I do still get occassional knock when I drive as registered by the laptop.

Yesterday I took the car for a test run 0-60 and at about 3000rpm @ 80kpa the ecm retarted timing from 2 - 5 deg for a long period of time until I slowed down again.

Also at high load 80kpa and higher going up a hill in OD it experienced knock. That is supposed to be normal??

And just when I was cruising there was the odd instance of knock soemtimes it did pull out timing sometimes it did not even pull out timing and just added a knock count.

I have now burnt another chip taking away 1.5deg spark advance from the trouble areas and see how it will go. I should be able to get rid of the knock completely or is it impossible?? I run the highest grade of fuel possible.

I should also mention that although I had reduced spark advance by 2 deg from across the board I had the best 0-60 time ever.

Any other tables in Tunerpro that you can play around with to fight knock? I have the car running at about 170 deg F.

Any imput would be great,

There's no need to run the timing right up against the detonation threshold on a street car.

Often while excessive timing feels good the car is actually slower.

But, you'll want to have the whole table say 2-3d from the same detonation point. And you can cure some areas of detonation with a little more fuel, just before you see detonation.

I am very glad I saw this...it is going in my "Things You Just Gotta Know" file.

Grumpy, what you mean buy having the table 2-3deg from the same detonation point. Meaning only reducing the advance by a maximum of 2-3d off the stock chip?

Adding more fuel via the BLM? or is there an enrich factor table you are talking about?

Not to worry I found the table where you can add fuel with regards to rpm.

Cheers!
