Newbie Lost in the Maze

OK - I've read what I can find, and the sticky about getting started, and I'm lost.

I have 305 TBI LO3 Automatic. I figured out I have 8746 ECM, 2732 chips. I see the pocket programmer. I see the UV light. I see the chips. And I see mention of an adapter to do EEPROMS instead of the EPROMS. I see links to Moates. I don't see this adapter to use EEproms, or what specific EEprom is used, or prices on anything, or what is involved in making the adaptation (soldering, ie further ruining what I have). The Moates site is terrible web design - gives me a headache.

Looks like $220 give or take to use Eproms ($150 programmer, free software, $60 UV). Can anyone give me a heads up on the EEprom stuff? Cost? Exactly what to get (p/n)?

And what about the emulators I hear about, to do it while driving? What to get? Cost? Where from? I see the Romulator, another $179 - is this it?

Dazed and Confused!

You'll often have problems with a tech site like this asking too many questions at once.

Your basic problem is that you don't seem to know the difference between the programming operation on EPROMs and EEPROMs. BTDT- we're all regularly confused while learning .

This is to some extent covered in Trax's Promintro article, like Jeremy says. You need to know that when the code is on the chip, the ECM can't tell the difference between an EPROM and an EEPROM.

The Moates site is a thing of beauty- the contents is what matters . He's got some great adapters that mean you don't have to solder stuff, and there's even a header there that will enable you to connect Memcals to your burner/reader (see Promintro). Whether you choose to start with EPROMs and UV erasers or use electrically erasable chips is up to you- cost it out. I've started with a burner and UV eraser because I thought it was the cheapest option at the time. It's not as fast as the RT options, but you can reburn a memcal without having to use an adapter and EEPROM or flash chip.

Apparently you didn't look very hard.

On Moates site, click the Hardware link.
Look at the G2 adapater, at the right is an image, click it for the adapter install pictures.

At a minimum, you'll need:
S1 $9 zif socket for ease of install/remove of chip

C1 $6 flash prom (EEPROM)

G2 $30 adapter

Burn1 $75 usb based chip reader/burner

There are other methods as you've already listed, but this is cheaper at $120.

Your going to want to data log, so you'll need an ALDL cable.

ALDU1 $50 ALDL to usb converter

CABL1 $30 ALDL conector to ALDU1 cable.

This is assuming you have a laptop with a usb port. If not, then you'll need to do things differently.

Thanks for the breakdown of parts and numbers.

I'm an idiot when it comes to this, and I'm first to admit it. I saw and read all that on the Moates site, and still didn't understand it. The G2 says "Designed to accept 29C256/27SCF512 chips", and the C1 says "direct replacement for 27C256 chips", and for us TBI newbies that don't know what the hell we're looking at, the mental link from all this to 2732 (the only number we know) just doesn't happen.

I have enough knowledge about motors to be dangerous. I have no knowledge of electronics. And although I have done some programming (a very long time ago), and would be willing to learn enough about the tables, values, and such to attempt doing my own chips, all the electronic garb and chip talk is very greek to me.
