$32b to $6E question...

I've seen the posts where everyone says the $6E is better than the $32b (I have a 88 GTA), so I've decided to try this $6E conversion. I was told to copy all my tables over from $32B, so does this include the PROM ID and Checksum? I got the $32Bv001 ecu and am using it for my BIN as a reference. I also saw a post saying that the cold start injector has to be disconnected and/or plugged. I'm a little timid, so I figured I ask first before diving in.

Thanks.

PROM ID doesn't matter, that is just a number that would display on a scantool -- make it whatever you please. My own bins, I just number them sequentially.

Checksum needs to be recalculated, so it matches the new bin. Most PROM editing programs (TunerCat, TunerPro, etc.) do that for you automatically.

The cold start injector functions off of a thermal switch, rather than on any command from the ECM, so at a minimum you should unplug the electrical connector.

Some people go further than that, and either disconnect it from the fuel rail (you'll need a plug if you do this), or completely remove it, which requires an additional plug, or '89-up runners that don't have the injector hole to begin with, but you don't HAVE to do any of that, if you don't want to.

HTH,

Thanks Dave. I'm just wondering why you can't use the standard arap bin file for my 88? Aren't the computers and sensors the same between 88 and 89? Or is there something wrong with the arap.bin code?

ARAP should work fine, with VATS disabled. Lots of people use that as a base cal for 6E. I sorta recall there being one other minor difference, like a N.O. vs. N.C. fan request input, but that's a very easy change.

Be aware that ARAP has an awful lot of spark advance, though. Probably more than what you want, especially if you've got an iron head motor. I'd suggest you either back off the timing to start, or just use a milder stock cal as your base. Also, ARAP was an automatic cal. If you've got a manual tranny, or a 305, it might not be the most appropriate choice.

Personally, I'm not sure that I'd copy a bunch of $32 tables, vs. just starting off with a stock 6E bin and tuning from there.

Awesome. I'll look into changing the VATS enbale flag and disconnecting the cold start injector. I'd like to use the $6E table by default because I am rebuilding this engine with higher compression pistons, aluminum heads, new cam, larger injectors etc. So, if it's advance curve is a little more aggressive, then it should be a good starting point.

Thanks, you've been a great help.

If you've raised the CR, it might be worth taking a look at the spark tables on a stock 'vette cal, like ASXB, as compared to ARAP.

IIRC, ARAP has about 4-6° more spark in some areas, than what production 'vettes got.

I'd rather start off tuning with a bin that's a little too mild, and work my way up, than go the other direction.

Sorry for bumping into this old thread, but I also am looking to do a $32 to $6E ARAP conversion.

I have a stock 86 TA, 305 TPI, auto. I have copied spark advance tables, will disconnect cold start injector, I have changed injector size to my 19 lb/hr factory's. I've also heard something in regards to fan changes that need to be made, any info on that? Oh yeah, also turning VATS off.

Is there anything else I need to do before I start tuning this BIN?

My instinct is that “copying the spark tables” into the ARAP will not cut it. Not only are the tables different, but how it adds/subtracts timing under different circumstances are very different between your “normal” bin and the ARAP, and I’m not sure you’ll end up accomplishing what you want with that. I’d start with some ’89 code out of a similar car and go from there. If you insist on running something ARAP based, I think long term you’ll be happier starting with the ARAP as is and adjust from there (or possibly, take some percent advance out of the whole table).

As far as the fan flag, vettes use a NO switch where the f-bodies go the other way round. If you’ve removed your AC then the way the vettes have it set will work, if you haven’t then you have to switch it.

This may be a dumb question, but what's wrong with 32B that you would want to go to $6E ARAP? Just currious because I'm switching from my 870 to a PROMinator'd 165.

I'm quite new to the DIY Prom thing. I've found it hard to find anything on $32/$32B stuff at all, and anywhere I have posts on it, I see the same advice every time: Switch to $6E. I don't know about differences between them at all, but you are the first person I've heard from that's said to not bother switching. I'm just going on what I've heard from others...

I'd like to know more about any differences between $32 and $6E if anybody has more info about that.

Oh yes, I only listed ARAP because that is the one I hear the most about being the best choice to start with. I've heard AUJP might be a better choice, but I'm having a hard time matching BCC's to their original application without spending hours upon hours looking up each code one by one. Would any of you know a closer match to my car (86 305, auto)?

Thanks again,
-Dustin

You could start with an APYN bin and copy in the ARAP MAF table. The 89 (6E) code was the best and last version of the GM Maf code. There are significant differences and improvements between 32b and 6E. Others may be able to give you more details if needed.

Along time ago, the ARAP was the only way to go.
At one point in time, there just we're many people that had a handle on MAF tuning. So for along time it was the only way to go. We're talking like 5+ years ago.

It's still a good starting place, but as mentioned it needs work.

Seems like with all the people that have used it someone would have posted a *starting* .bin for it. ie all the little tweaks to get it to work intially. Hint, hint. Maybe at the Moates site?. More hints.........

Grump, all I can say is your the friggin' man Wherever you get your time/enthusiasm for all us loser newbie's in this DIY stuff, let me in on some of that.

What are you referencing at the Moates site? I've gotten his ARAP BIN, can't seem to see any altered ARAP's. There are a few AUJP's in the Modded Binaries folder, the rest are all stockers. Maybe a little more prodding, and this newb will finally catch on?...

Oh ya, another randomizer for ya I've got a couple friends that I can't seem to wean off Ford. One, a 94 Probe GT, another a 93 Escort 1.9 SEFI ( ). I'd like to get them into this PROM stuff, don't know anything about Ford stuff with the EEC-IV. Which direction should I point them in for more info?

Point them to a local Chevy dealer....

I think on Craig's site there is a link to some Ford stuff.

Um...the link above is actually for Mark Mansur's TunerPro site.

Craig's site is www.moates.net

And specifically, the file library is at:
