Data logging...where to start

Ok...I have the cable made...have the softwear....now I need some guidance on how to get started compiling some data from my car. I know obviously I have to run it etc...but what should I look for as in the key variables/fields and what are sort of the acceptable parimeters etc? Any guidance from others who have started out on this with the L03 In the past???

Thanks,
Dave

i started with closed loop/BLM. at idle i watched the cells or cell populate. say 30 map at 800 rpms. i adjusted the fuel tables to get close to 128. if that blm was 140(lean) i changed the table proportionalely 140/128 X the value in that cell. same with off idle say 1200 rpms at 30 map. all with car in driveway neutral. my issue was lean to a point check engine light came on due to mods. i needed to be enrichened just about everywhere. eventually i drove car around block on level grade and more cells populated. all lean. so my data logging/tuning was to fix a problem. startup choke seemed ok so did not change any of that. i was able to watch the sensor readings on cold start change as engine warmed. i also adjusted the upper rpms by disabling (PE) not recommended. again i was lean but enrichened before the disable and dataloged while disabled.. datalogging will do much more but this was the begining. what made you decide to take a look?

Where did you get teh specs to make your cable? Can I order that cable premade. I wouldn't mind plugging my onboard PC directly into the cars computer. Having them talk to each other would be awesome.

hey ronny....that makes sense to me....sounds like a good starting point. Without actually burning new chips what can I sort of change....just fuel (my making my regulator adjustable)....and timing right? I figure by adusting fuel pressure I should be able to get my BLM's to the ideal of 128...am I correct in this assumtion?

Also.....if I mess around with timing any ideas as to what this will effect in terms of the data I pull down? and what should I sort of look for and what "targets" to strive for??????

Thanks for you help.

Traxx...there are a bunch of posts on how to make the cable or where to buy one already made. I am just too lazy to find them right now....:-)

the only time adjusting the FP will get you where you need, is if you are off everywhere. when i started datalogging, i had some cells that were rich, some that were lean.

i guess i am stuck in the mindset of tuning, i don't mess with timing or fuel, other than in the chip. but that is because i have full control.

the fuel pressure is set to GM specs(generally). mine is 12 lbs. winaldl is what i use for datalogging. i ran it on windows 98 and now on XP. this give you feedback as to what the ECU sees(sensors) and changes it is making(closed loop/02 sensorblm/int). set timing to stock. dont change that until you have vast knowledge of tuning(you know who you are). i got into tuning since my car would not run period due to mods. plan on months of study and note taking. i have all my datalogs on file as wellas every burn. i have no need for adjustable reg. i tried that and did not work for me(too lean/daily driving) with vafpr. that i used to fool the ECU. cable i purchased from customefis. worked well. what mods have you done to engine? if you think you can improve a stock engine tune that may not happen. few of us(you know who you are) have that knowledge. some day i will relate the Mikuni tuning story when carbs on sleds were going Mikuni and the first MIk was bolted to a snowmobile. 1970's. off subject. but tuning related.

Dewey...
That makes sense about not messign with the timing/fuel now that you mention it. I guess what I should start doing before I go changing ANYTHING is get some good data...analyze it ALL and then start looking into/asking questions regarding what the data is telling me and what changes to the chip will should be applied as I move slowly along to a better tune.

So given that...I guess my main goal at this point should be just to get some data WITHOUT touching anything and learn what it is telling me.

Ronny..
Thanks for your input/experiece. The engine is 305...L98 cam....usual sort of stuff, exhaust, ultimate TBI, headers etc etc. I have a set of port/polished 416's and a new intake almost ready to be put onto the car but I want to get a good baseline with tuning before I go ripping into the heads because I know after I do that there are going to be a lot of tuning related "issuse". All things considered the car runs half decent right now....she does about 15.6 with bad traction, a 700R4 and stock non-posi rear end and lowball gears. I think with some decent gears, posi and a little more experience launching the car at the track I can probably be about 15.5/15.4 consistently. This with the stock tune, timing advanced and a bad exhaust valve which I discovered in my cam swap.........:-(

Ya I am trying to get as much informaiton regarding what to look for in the data once I start pulling things down on the weekend....I think I am not going to touch anything just get some data and interpret it.
