I followed this diagram to make an ALDL 2trans cable for 8192 communication. I can post some pics later.

This is for a DB9 serial port. I also used the pin 4 of the DB9 for the 12volt source.

You can use a USB port to datalog but you will need a USB -> RS232 (serial DB9) adapter. About 10 - 20 bucks, also, you will need to set up your logging software to read data at the correct port.
i.e.
USB port 1 = usually equals com 3
USB port 2 = usually equals com 4

This is my first shot at the 2trans cable and it works. Not pretty but it works. I never made anything like this before or even soldered, as you can tell.

Part list (Radioshack)
- 2, NPN Transistors, MPS2222A $0.69 each
- 4, 10K resistors, 1 for jmp AB $0.99 5pack
- 1, Diode, i used 1N4001 $0.59
- 1, PC board, helped me $1.79

+ some wire and a female DB9 connector, I already had the DB9 from computergate.com and used some solid telephone wire I had sitting around

Sorry that I haven't replied, I couldn't get to thirdgen.org all weekend.

It's suppose to work with 8192 baud, remember I'm very new to this myself and only deal with my 165 ecm.

On the back of the board everything is soldered together acording to the diagram in the earlier post. In my picture the letters on the board, (D)ata goes to the data pin on the ALDL and the (G)round goes to the ground and the 2,3,4,5 goes to those pins on the DB9 connector. Along with the diagram and picture you should be albe to copy what I did. I practiced soldering a few times before I started since I never did it before.

USB? I haven't tried since I have a DB9 port and don't have a Serial to USB adapter. $20 at newegg.com or computergate.com

Craig Moates sells the ALDL for $30. He sells an adapter to USB for $50.... There are two different cables. One for OBD-1 and one for OBD-2.

IF WWNF's cable works on OBD 1 it should work on your application. There is a switch on the USB adapter that shorts out A-B to give your codes IIRC. I have to look at the notes on the cable again (Especially since I bought it, albeit haven't had time to use it until tonight, maybe....)

BTW, glad to see I wasn't the only one who couldn't get on the site this weekend.......

I don't have a serial port on my laptop so I didn't want to build a cable myself. I also don't have a lot of time to do that anymore. I've been spending my time (and solder) working on various XLR and phono jack connections on my church's sound system......

I bought the USB adapter so I can do real time evaluations and modifications with the PROMinator I ordered. I do at least have a COM port so I can do that!!!! Hopefully the PROMinator will be USB or Firewire capable in the future.

Here is a picture of the adapter:

The single trans cable is for 160 baud. Did you try cleaning your contacts in the car ALDL port? I need to wiggle my wires sometimes to get it to connect.
