Not 3rd gen; burning PROMS for a vortec 350?

Does anyone have experience burning custom proms for the96-99 vortec 350s? i realize a vortec might be a good base for my 383 build, just wondering if they are as"easily" programmed as the older TBI's and TPI's? The OBD I setups essentially consist of the cables, prom burner, software and know how. Are the vortecs this easy and cost-effective like the TBI/TPI? Or are they far more involved both experience and money wise, thus negating the value of burning your own prom?

Thanks

You can use a Vortec engine with a TBI intake (there are several available) and tune your TBI ECM to work with it. That woud be the easiest, and most cost effective way to do it. The PCM that's used with the newer vortec is flash-based, you need special software for it (I only know of software for the 2000-up 350, or maybe it went back to 99?) that is faily expensive (around $500 IIRC).

This is unless you were talking about a truck that already has the newer PCM (under-hood mounted for the vortec CSFI setup).

I will most likely be finding out about the software required in more detail when I get the S-10 project rolling. I have a 2000 PCM for it.

thanks, i was thinking along the lines of a 96-99 vortec 350 w/ the stock injection setup which is itself more advanced than TBI. From there basically build it up from a stock complete motor, and then reprogam the computer accordingly.

Great engines, but they have that stupid injector setup that is bound to fail and isnt cheap :-(

I would love to see the timing tables from those engines :-)

We have the iron headed LT1 impala/caprice tables but no true vortec timing tables form the factory

later

There is an alternative injector setup available from GM that is NOT a poppet design, but still uses the tube design. IIRC, the pricing is close to that of conventional injectors, but you have to swap them all at the same time. I may be looking into that after I get my S-10 together.

Stay tuned........

I'm not even going to ask.....

Sitting here patiently waiting......

Anything I can to do help?
