base timing question

Just a quick question

How come so many guys run a base timing of 8,10, or even 12 degrees even though they burn their own proms? Isn't it easier on the starter to run lower timing? Just curious because I set mine to 0* BTDC, changed my constant to reflect that, and haven't had any noticable issues yet. Would I be better off bumping the base timing to 10* or so?

That might sound like kind of a "newbie" question, but in all the hundreds of hours of researching and hundreds more tuning, I haven't been able to find the answer to this.

Thanks guys

Well.. I would like to do a test on that some time...
Because I think that lying to the ECM about timing changes your injector timing also....
Not sure what the pros or cons of that are yet...
Bye the way I run my static @ 20.. and it starts really nice like that.

wow, 20 deg

Do you still have the timing constant set at the factory setting, or have you changed it to the 20 deg value? Are you running the stock GM starter, or a gear reduction/hi torque type?

After I get everything else dialed in, I'll probably toy around with a few different values and see what results I get.

I'm sure for some, whatever ir was stock is where it still is, as long as it starts fine. Which isn't a bad thing. My thinking is set it where it starts and runs best (through trial and error) since it will vary from engine to engine. It all has to do with compression ratio, cam profile, cam timing, etc.... It is, of course, important for it to start well both cold and hot.
