no start

ok I am not sure to post this here or not. I have been haveing problems starting my 89 gta. before I was burning my own chips, I would put the key in and goto start it and the vats light would stay on so I burned a chip and disabled the vats system and it has not done it in a long time. today however it would not start and the vats light did not come on but after a while it will start. I don't know if its the vats or something else. I would hear I click from under the dash when I try to get it to crank but thats about it. is there something else I should check or just try to burn a new chip?one more thing if the starter relay was going bad would it make the vats light stay on and not let you start the car? thanks

Could be the neutral safety switch. Its under the console. That seems the way they go, that after a while the car will start. If you turn your key, you should still have a fuel pump buzz, and all the accessory lights will also work. Just no cranking when you turn the key. Maybe someone knows how to troubleshoot this.?

I'm with brutalform, a no crank condition will not be the ECM. It can still be a VATS issue, or the neutral safety switch, or the starter, or the starter soleniod, but not the ECM or EPROM.

Yea, Floorguy, and I just had the same problem on my Formula. We had just converted to an automatic, and had a no start issue all of a sudden. We thought it was a coincidental VATS issue at first, as we were wiring up the TCC, neutral safety, and reverse lights. After I burned a new EPROM, with the VATS eliminated, it still would not crank. It turned out that, as the used auto shifter I had scored, was moving, but the switch was not moving, or sliding along with the selector. We had it wired correctly, but as the selector was in "PARK", the switch itself was in "DRIVE", therefore not allowing the vehicle to crank. Thanks to Floorguy, and his sharp eye! I must admit, it had us wondering for 2 hrs. I just wanted to share this in case anyone else has the problem. BTW, I reactivated the VATS.

I will check out the neutral safety switch. See though when this happened before I disabled the vats, the vats light would stay on like a had the wrong key in it and it would not crank. would the vats light stay on if it was the neutral safety switch? That is a good idea as my car has a b&m shifter in it. I just really need to find out what it is because it hurts to have my car pushed out of the emissons place because my baby won't start

Well I just pulled off the vats relay in the kick panel and found it looking like it was melting the prongs on it are covered in a black crud. could this be from extra long cracking times or is this something to look into? thanks for the help.
