Ummm
Every known common device used on our ecms' is linked thru the sticky above called the "Tuning Guide"
Even an extremely informative compatibility guide posted by Mangus. What combos and options you have to choose from.
I run Tunercat and Romulator with a Pocket Prgramer II and use Lockers on my 148 for logging and datamaster on the 165/730 stuff. I play with TunerPro RT and use it for some features the others dont have or arent as easy.
Depends on what u need and how many vehicle platforms you ultimately wish to play with.
Start there first and then search for more info on the ones that seem to suit you best.
later

All the tools in the world are pointless, unless you keep notes, and look for trends.
I've wound up collecting most all of them, and it just varies on what I'm doing which one I use. They're all good products.
You might just start with the minimums until you get used to how you like to do things, and then decide.

A good text editor. Look up Emacs on the web.
You can modify BINs, search BIN files, and make log files of what you changed and how it reacted to the change.
I would start with that and then get a cheap EEPROM burner. Emulators are over-rated in my opinion and newbies tend to misuse them in the worst way. It allows you to change things some fast that you lose track of what you did.

Hence my preaching about notes.
