'165 for 700R4 control only??
Hi guys, I have a complete immaculately clean 1987 305 TPI complete engine and transmission I just picked up for $115. It is going in a 1983 Firebird. The engine did not come with the TPI intake. I will return it to TPI at some point, but just to drive the car I will run a carb. I will use a 165 PCM when I put TPI back on. Can I get the 165 ECM, taking VSS input, to control just the 700R4? What are the minimum inputs that the 165 needs just to run the 700R4 overdrive and converter lockup correctly?

There's a document floating around about using an ecm for ignition control, that you might try searching for.
It'll take less effort in the long run, just to wire up as much as you can, while you're in there wiring. I've been thou the *Stage* type project, and it's really easier to do it all at once, or as much as possible.
You'll need battery power, key-on, grounds, VSS, TPS, RPM, TCC out, brake light input, probably coolant temp., then you'll also have to turn off the diagnostic flags for various other items.

You have two choices:
1) do exactly as Grumpy said
2) You could also wire it up like GM did the mid-late 80's pick-up trucks that used the 700R4 without computer control. Use a vaccuum diaphram. I think TCI and some aftermarket companies even sell a kit if you don't want to figure it out yourself.

I've got a working B & M control setup that is speed controlled.
Removed from my car when I went to the 730.
Worked fine, just got control by ecm and didn't need it anymore.
part number BMM-70244 at Summit. $75 (+ship) takes it
Or just do a toggle switch (possible vac switch permissive), crude and not user freindly but effective for cruising. At least until you do the TPI swap. (Will be selling mine soon too!)
Gotta make a list and do some cleaning out this spring.

Okay, idea. What if I use a CC quadrajet and its corresponding ECU? I know the CC quadrajets have a TPS. Did the 700R4 that would come in a 1982-84 CC Qjet'ed F body have the same 4 prong plug like the 85+ TPI 700R4s do? Does the computer from a CC Qjet'ed car have outputs for the trans that will be acceptable?

the connector is the same, im not sure without looking at a wiring diagram, but you may need to swap the pins around.
you need power from the brake switch when the brake is released to the power side of the TCC connector, then the ground side of the TCC connector goes to the ECM.
you will need the signals Grumpy mentioned above.

Thanks again. It looks like I'm going to use a non CC qjet and get the standalone vac. module to control TCC from a truck. There is a U pull truck yard around here with lots of chev. v8 stuff.
