Noob With A New (sorta) Project

Greetings from southern California-the "land of fruits and nuts"

I have been toying around with my Megasquirted 402-powered '72 Chevy C-20 peecup for over a year now and have decided that enough is enough!

I currently upgraded to the MS-II but have quickly summized that it is not for me. I need a little more compatibility with a whole lot less hassle. I realize that coding has it's share of headaches but also realize that I really cannot beat a "factory engineered" system for reliability and besides, there are alot more of "you" out there with a similar combo to draw from. Megasquirt although very good, is also very adaptable so many more use it for "nondescript" adaptations. Anywhere from a chainsaw to a Ferarri. The guys there are very knowledgeable and helpful but since it is considered an "experimental" FI system it also has it's share of drawbacks.

I cannot say anything to the contrary of the system, per se, but since it is experimental one must be prepared to do ALOT of tuning and hair-pulling!

I need GM guys with GM logic and GM applications for MY GM application!

That being said I have decided to go with the GM ECM and start over. A brief synopsis of my install:

I borrowed the "7747" ECM, MAP & all engine sensors from an '88 454-powered Silverado. I have shelved the ECM and the MAP because my current Megasquirt does not need these as I am not "piggybacking" a factory system. I modified the FPR so I could could bump the pressure up to 19PSI and effectively make the stock 80# injectors shoot 90 lb/hr. The fuel system is all custom utilizing a frame-rail mounted pump, accumulator, filter and dual tank changeover valve. I am using a "small cap", 8-pin dizzy for use with the total spark control tables. I am currently using the IAC as well. I am running an Innovate LC-1 WBO2 but if I stick with the "7747" ECM I will ditch this unless I go with a "730" ECM and use the coding for a wide band. I dunno yet. My engine is a '71 402, 9.0:1 CR, Comp Cams XE250-H10 cam, Performer intake, dual exhaust-NO headers. I am running a manual tranny and the donor truck had an auto. I will also NOT be using an EGR nor canister purge or obviously VCC so I can write these out of the program. I will have to get an ESC and knock sensor as well as a VSS but these are pretty easy to come by.

This truck is my "haul around a big-*** Lance camper" truck so I use it occasionally. This has afforded me the luxury of deeming it as a "project" but it is now becoming a big PITA and is time to put it to bed. This is wat has prompted me to shift gears and go the factory ECM route. Datalog, tune and burn....done. I am not new to the datalogging, VE, sparktable, MAP table, etc. stuff because the Megasquirt is, for all intents and purposes, a warmed over GM hack anyway..but in compiler language. So I will have to get up to speed on BLM's and binary language addressing but I have read enough about it and it seems easy enough. What I will be doing is picking your guys' brains for some insight and a little help here and there. I figure that the stock "AMUR" chip should get me in the ballpark so I can do some logging and see where I need to make some changes.

Craig Moates has been kind enough to point me in the direction of what I need to get into "PROMming" so I can get my feet wet.

I will be here grabbing what I can and hopefully be able to give back as well.
If any of you have any suggestions for my install, please, by all means, pass it on!
I have read some of the "where to start" guides here and it looks as if I am in the right place after all!

Thanx again!!
Bud Weaver
