746 tuning prep..

I am going to try and jump into tuning. i have read alot of the stickys and i still dont understand what chip i have to use and if i have to do anything to my computer.

I would like to buy everything from moates.

Should i buy this and what other items do i need..(Chip, adaptor?)
APU1 AutoProm Package: USB Version [APU1] - $325.00 : Moates.Net

I would like to atleast do real time tuning and no uv chips.

The AutoProm will get all that done for you. I have one, its what I started off with, I dont use the emulation feature that often becuase I usually just datalog wth it, study the datalog at the house where I can make more scientific adjustments in comfort. The emulation does come in handy for roughing in the idle, fan temps or the stuff you know is just flat out wrong with your tune, also its real handy for an ECM Bench where quick changes are always welcome.

Start out slow with datalogs, study them, tweak the bin, burn a new prom, datalog the new burn, compare it to your first to see if your giving your engine what it likes(to quote GRUMPY), and so on.

Anyway, yea an AutoProm will work for you, but there are a couple more choices(I run a 730 and dont know much about the 746), do a little research into the other possibilities and read the stickies. Contact Craig Moates, he's a nice guy and will get you fixed up with your ECM adaptor (I think there is 2 different adaptors for your ecm, depending on leg spacing) and eeprom's.

Yes you will need an adapter to use the AP or the Ostrich.
Both of which will emulate.
Craig explains it on his site better than I can. (for a tbi)
You can also get the EBL setup (search)
Or the Prominator.
