Help Making ALDL Cable...Schematics are making me nuts!

I've done a lot of reading on ALDL cables and need one since I am taking steps towards dataloging!!!
I've looked at a ton of schematics on these things but for some reason everything is going right over my head. I'm not near great with electronics but I usually get the basics of stuff pretty quick, my soldering isn't perfect but I think it will do.

Can anyone give detailed step by step instructions on how to build one of these??? What parts are required and where they go etc? Maybe if I have someone to help guide me along these schematics will start to make some sense.

I have a 1991 7730 ECM and I know there are different resistors required or something along those lines to get into ALDL mode. I would like it to not rely on the cig lighter for power but have that as an option (if possible). AND I will need a serial to USB adapter because my new laptop only has USB ports (I read something about these adapters having problems??...I'm running Windows XP as well).

I don't want to just fork out $40+ for a cable then buy an adapter when it seems you can buy the parts really cheap. $40 isn't much as far as I'm in but the main reason I don't want to buy one is because I want to learn this stuff and making a cable like this would make it much mre gratifying when(if) it works!

I think I've already given up on making one...
