Differences between 87 and 88 PROMs

MAF speaking ...

I have both a 87 and 88 5.7L prom for a 3.27 rear gear auto car (no vats on the 88). Is the 88 a better chip to go with? I expect GM did some recalibration over the years, but until get setup for making my own proms, I can only ask those who have seen/tested them.

Ultimately I want to make my own prom based off a 89 bin. Although I do need to purchase my 24lb injectors before I start.

Second question.

Was the PROM used in a vette better in the sense of performance that the PROM used in the same year F-body.

'still tring to find his prom burner, but discovering all this cool stuff that has been forgotten!

'85 S15 Jimmy 2WD, 5.7L, 86 TPI with 87 PROM, 52mm TB, Airfoil, ported upper/lower, no EGR, Edelbrock 6089 heads, ZZ3 cam, 1.6 rockers on intake, 9.75:1 comp, etc. etc.

I believe the prom in a Vette would be calibrated for a lighter car....I would not use it. Dont know which chip is better....you would have to compare both stock bins.

You don't necessarily have to upgrade to 24lb injectors to use '89 microcode, 'Vette or F-body. Both are calibrated for 22lb injectors from the factory. Overall, the Y-body software has hotter spark maps and higher TCC lockup points.

I'm running an '88 GTA TPI system on my project car, upgraded to '89 ARAP microcode and unplugged my 9th injector. My engine specs and performance are on the page linked in my signature.

From experience, I'd recommend upgrading to the '89 software (F or Y body) rather than the '88 stuff. No more 9th injector, newer (supposedly better written) software.

I'd second the recommendation. I went from 87 305 TPI F-body (ACXS) code to the ARAP vette code. All I had to do was change up a few bits (MAF analog, filter MAF, VATS off, etc) and bytes (FI constants, raised TCC lockup further for even more drivability). It does a good job with the CS inj disconnected. Much smoother startups and you can feel the timing difference - makes your car feel a lot more aggressive right off the bat. The ARAP's the way to go in my opinion.

Craig,

What program do you use?

Do you have the *.ecu file for the 165 ECM?

I am just getting my burner and such setup.

Mark.
