What Prom II

I hope this time I get an answer. I had this message moved and it seems to have been lost. Here it is again.
I just did a engine swap and need a new chip. I swaped a LG4 305 for a L98 350 with headman headers , 3 inch pipes, flowmaster muffler, Elderbrock performer intake , and a open air breather. I just put in a new computer (a shop told me it was dead , it kept jumping in and out of closed and open loop, it also read 0 rpm's on a scope when the enging was running). My next step is to put in a new chip. What one should I go for? Isn't there a company that will program a chip to match your specs? Thanks in advance for the advise. JIM

OK, had nice message typed out..quotes and all...mucked up my username and lost it all...so here's the quick rundown...

Your computer jumping in and out of closed loop was a result of your headers moving the 02 sensor away from the heat source and your 02 sensor is no longer getting hot enough. That's fixed with a new heated 02 sensor...not a new computer.

Your car showing 0 rpms on the scope...that could have been a bad ECM, I dunno. I assume it fixed the problem so it must have been.

You say L98 and I assume you converted to TPI when you ditched the old 305. If that's the case and you only have done mods on the motor that you listed and don't have a bigger cam, etc. You will be fine just finding a stock 350 chip to put in it. It won't be optimal, but it will get you rolling. You'll also want 22 or 24 lb injectors.

If you want a custom chip and have time to learn...burn your own which is what this board is here for. If you don't have time or no desire to learn...Ed Wright at Fast Chip(s?) is the best over the counter Chip programmer I've heard of. There are lots of other places that will do it for you though.

If you have a carbed app...I have no idea. Find a 350 pickup chip from the mid 80's to drop in it if you'd like. Probably work OK. Or you might contact Ed and see if he has the knowledge to burn a custom carb chip.

Good Luck,
GregF

"Elderbrock performer intake , and a open air breather" This clearly indicates a carbed setup. I would say that a "custom" chip will still not be able to feed the engine the fuel it needs. I would tinker with the carb's secondaries, and get some thinnner rods for em ones (higher letter I believe) to get more fuel in there. I guess a custom chip will only really help part throtle operation while the secondaries are still closed, although I dont think you'll feel a difference.

I have a Edelbrock performer intake on my TPI...Performer is a trade name for boat loads of Edelbrock intakes...although when someone says that I instantly think carb.

My roomie is putting a 383 in his 87 Monte SS and got his carb re-jetted. We're hoping he won't need a new chip or computer...but we're waiting til' he gets it assembled to know for sure.

Oh, yah, an open air breather means to me a vent in the valve cover...not a open air air filter...but I'm from Indiana...so I might just be backwards.

Okay... well my bad then. I doubt Edelbrock calls their TPI intakes, "performer" intakes. So that's why the confusion. As a mattter of fact they call it a "HIGH-FLO T.P.I. BASEPLATE". That's right off their website. Back to your question...

With the mods you listed, a chip will give you some gains although not spectacular. If you still have a stock cam and heads then I wouldnt bother paying the big companies hundreds of dollars for a custom chip just yet. Wait till you REALLY need one

Thanks for the info, Yes I have a 4bbl Quad. I swaped it over from my old set up. I am not that up on carbs yet. I'm getting a check engine light and was told by a few guys that should update the chip. I still have a few bugs to work out here and there. one being the CTS, (my fan doesn't come on, and when she gets hot it funs really bad so, bad it stalls when the RPM's go below 500!)
Thanks again for the advise. JIM

Blade:

OK, I stand corrected...I have the Edelbrock intake and I swear the box says performer...but maybe I just assumed it did since all their boxes looked the same.

Jim:

My roommate is putting a 383 in his 87 Monte SS and he's retaining the computer carb. Have you had any problems other than your SES light with it? He got his carb rebuilt and jetted up for the engine...but we haven't put the motor in yet, so we don't know if he'll have any problems. Any insite you could give would be good. This is new ground to me. I'm a Fuel Injected Junkie...don't do much with carbs...

Thanks
