if i were you i'd try searching before posting fo i have seen more than 100 posts on this subject, but to push you the right way try searching for diacom, ease,or adal as those should get you close--seems to me traxton even lists some in his prom burning article.i also know there are some sharewhere versions around where you build your own cable--hope this helps

Like was mentioned above, there is some homework to be done on you part.
The short answer is probably.
The laptop would be better used for monitoring the ecm, and datalogging what is goin on. Then you could use the laptop or a PC to *burn* a new calibration.
There is some software for doing calibration changes on the fly but it's not very good, or the ones that do work are very $$$.
Might read up on prom burning and emulators, and get some back ground, it will answer alot of your guestions, and give thought for new guestions

Who's going to talk about 'Mode 4' communications? I've been waiting, looking, and trying. It's there, very powerful I think, but no one mentions it. Any comments from the gallery? I'd really like to hear about someone who has used this stuff successfully!

BTW, Mode4 is a way to change your engine tuning parameters on-the-fly. If someone were willing to share information on the protocol and command structure, I'd be more than willing to write the software...

Are you talking about the 730?.
The 730 in the laste versions have an extra ram chip in them.
The 8625 also has extra RAM that cam be accessed.
Hmm, maybe write me off list and we'll see even if on the same frequency about what we're considering. John Gwyne at the DIY_EFI stuff has a write to 730 setup, but takes the *extra chip* 730 to use it.
I have an old GM tuners set up, as in what GM used in the developement of the syclones (1227749 ecm). I didn't realise it when I got it that with out the software it would be completely useless, to me. Any way if you are any one is close to Dayton and want to borrow it, or purchase it might leand some clues as to how gm did such things.

Bruce,

I was thinking of the 165 routines, perhaps a similar functionality is available on the 730's. I'm not sure what all can be done, but if indeed the Mode-4 I have seen referenced is workable, then it might be just a hop-skip to write an auto-adaptive timing/fuel tweak routine. Once again, though, other than the mode initiation I know nothing of the protocol.

If the interactive mode would allow adjustment of enrichment and timing, while simultaneously providing data for logging, then you're in the business of parametric matrix optimization (at WOT, Power over a map of RPM ranges, /w/ Timing & Enrichment as the independent variables) using some sort of PDE bisection approach applied to a series of WOT operations, using weight, speed, time (maximize Power=F*(dx/dt)=m*a*v=m*v*(dv/dt) and KS signal (god help ya) as feedback. Might need to clamp the enleanment, and overall this could be really catastrophic if done without a little feed-forward thinking. It would be hard to beat if it worked at all, though.

Anyways, trying to get the gray juices going a bit. Once you can hear what a car has to say and tell it what you want it to hear, it's only natural that you'd want to establish a dialogue. Seems that it might be very efficient to let the car figure out for itself (with a little help on the math) what it wants.

Best regards,
Craig

Personally auto adaptive means very little if anything to me. All the wiz bang stuff that I've seen has fallen to the waste side, if you want that just find a Cutler ECM, they work really well, just takes a couple weeks to learn in the engine (on a dyno).

I'm at a total lose for everyone and this big deal about real time tuning.

Sorry tuning is a slow process.

If you not taking notes, and measuring performance then your wasting your time, and gasoline, IMO.

Try figuring out the ion detection strategy for knock detection, if the grays need sumthin to do. Getting rid of the acoustic devise would really be almost more meaningful then any ecm mod or software change
