getting started with PROM

Hi.

How can I get information on the PROM used in the ECM? I'm not sure where to start, so any help is useful.

I'm an engineer and have access to PROM burners - I just don't have much knowledge of what's in the PROM :-)

I've heard it's just a bunch of tables. If so, I need to know what they are!

thanks in advance

To start you need the BroadCast Code off of the ECM or get all of the numbers off of it and I will be able to look it up for you. You should also take the EPROM out and verify the actual chip you have for instance a
27C128
27C256
27C512

They are different depending on the year and make of ECM the MAF cars typically used the 27C128 and the speed Density used the 27C256 and the newer 93 up went into the 27C512 then GM moved into the OBDI and OBDII.

regards
John

As for "how" to get into PROM burning, read the other post by Rob P on "How to burn a PROM". It has links on how to start.

The next question on which chip you need depends on what car you have.

Many of the questions a beginner has is in the archives of this board. I had 99% of ALL my questions answered (after reading the links I gave in Rob P's question) were answered when I set the "display topic" on the top right corner of the main page for the PROM Board from 20 days to 1 year and start reading all the old posts from the oldest to the most recent.

In fact, their were questions answered I didn't even know to ask in those posts. The older posts of this board really are a very useful resource.

Then, if you still have a specific question, just post them here. It is far easier than you think.

To alter the PROM you need an Editor for your particular ecm/eprom. I like TunerCat for my SD TPI car, but others like GMPRO, especially for MAF cars. Try both and make your own conclusion.

Thanks! Great start.

Do you think the computer used from 305 Q-Jet motor will work with a 350 Q-jet application?I am thinking that when I build up my motor, that I'll use the stock settings to get it to run and then start futsing with the settings.
