747, CL/ALDL spark

What is the purpose of CL/aldl spark? In the 747 it looks like most bins are set to 8 deg. At a first glance it appears to be added to total SA after CL is reached. Is this a sort of engine protection GM built in for customers that like to flog their cold vehicles?
