reliability of eproms

I have a general question. I just got my tax refund and it's time to go shopping. I know some of you carry extra stock memcals in the car with you in case your burned chips fail.

What is the reliability of previously erased proms that have new info on them.

I've never had one go bad while in service. They usually dont want to program anymore. Or if they do, when you put them in the car you get a constact check engine light for a bad prom. I dont carry an extra ones... and right now I'm running a 29C256 :P

Probably a bigger problem is you made a change and then after driving a little you realized you "flubbed it up".

I always carry a previous KNOWN GOOD version with me for that very reason. After a period of time of using the new BIN, it becomes my new OLD AND TRUSTY.

If you get a jump, or alternator shorts you regret not having a spare ECM and Prom. An A/C spike can kill either or both. Also, the *socket* can totally fail with one insertion

Once programed it's about impossible to screw it up, but outside A/C can kill it.
